I am 5'11", 173 lbs, riding an aluminum frame with carbon fork and seatstays. Don't do any Cat 1 hills/mountains, but want a light durable wheelset for up to $700.

Am thinking about the Velomax Orion II. Anyone have any experience or advice to offer?

Matt

I've heard good things about the Velomax Ascent II's. I'm also a much heavier rider than you and have found the Campy Scirocco's to be bombproof. You can get the Zondas or Eurus for that budget. I hear raves about the Eurus. They come either Campy or Shimano compatible.

A friend rides Velomax Ascents. Very very very good wheel. Don't think they're as stiff as my Shimano 7700s, but I think they roll better. For you, the Orions would probably be wonderful. I think Supergo had a sale last year for ~$400 so keep checking.

BTW, Velomax is in Long Beach, CA and they're customer service is supposed to be good.
Best.

Thanks for the advice! I'll look into supergo, but I think they were just echoing the MSRP when I last looked. Maybe when the 2005's come out, they'll drop the price.

Thanks for the advice! I'll look into the campy wheels as well.

You should be able to find Campy Neutrons for under $700. Very durable.

Unless you're fixed on buying a "boutique" wheel, give Dave a call at Speed Dreams (http://speeddream.com/speed_dream.php) or Mike at Odds and Endos (http://www.oddsandendos.com/). Either will build up a reliable and relatively light wheel that will take into account your weight, riding style and performance objectives. And, if they ever need repair, you can do it yourself with commonly available spokes, nipples, tools. The high tension wheels like the Eurus and Orion can be a little tricky to repair for the average joe six pack.
