hey all, first post in this forum (i'm usually over in the SS spot)... i'd like some advice concerning a crankset for a new SS MTB i'm building up: what are some of your favorites? i'd like something light, tough, and cheap. whaddya say?

You're only allowed to pick two out of three. :)

thats what i was gonna say, but if you want cheap and tough that's pretty easy. Get the Race Face DH crankset with a cheap bb

Tough and cheap, but NOT light are a set of Profile Racing Chromoly cranks.
TruVative makes a sweet singlespeed cranks in alum. Light and tough, but not cheap!
If you're running as a single speed I would recommend you NOT go with a cheap bottom bracket. Riding a single imposes a lot greater torque and a cheap bb will self destruct.
I've always liked RaceFace products, so ALL theirs are good. I'm currently running a set of TruVative Hussefelts on my bike (double with a bash ring) and a Hussefelt DH bb. For aesthetic reasons, I've never really like Shimano Cranks, but the new SAINT cranks are gorgeous.

Same here. I love my Hussefelts and I have Truvativ Gigapipe Team DH Isis for a BB. I love the strenght of these cranks and the BB. Specially for us bigger guys who still want to do the drops that 100lbs riders do. For strenght go with Hussefelts.
