Southeast - North St Pete, FL want to ride?

carl, I did a couple of autox events with the miata club a few years back in south st. pete. I had a s10 extreme, and had a blast doing it.

I think that club is still around. They changed their name to FAST. It's funny you say that because one day someone there told me a story about a guy who brought an S-10 to an event. Probably was you. That's awesome!

to top it off, the needed to move their trailer at the end of the event, and I was the only one there that could move it for them.

Yes, it is autocross. I run in SSM, but with my current schedule it will be a while before I can go to an event again. My weekend are limited to evenings after this coming one, and my weekdays are open after about 4. I'll send you a pm with my number so you'll have it.

D'oh! Looks like I can't reply to PMs either until I hit that 50 post milestone. You mentioned your area of St. Pete, I'm in the Kenwood area. From doing a quick Google mapping, it looks like my closest LBS is 66 Fixed and Singlespeed. Kinda cool since I have a '70s era Sears bike that I bought at a garage sale for 30 bucks that I want to eventually convert to a fixed gear. Sounds like your weekday and weekend schedules will mirror mine. I'll give you a call or post here or something when things calm down and I can go riding.

That's awesome! When I ran with the Central Florida guys, there were two Chevy Colorado owners that regularly came out. They eventually got good enough to threaten the regular sports car guys and totally beat up cocky novices in souped up sports cars.

It was always funny to hear a formerly cocky newbie going 'I can't believe I got beat by a truck!"

I swear I'm going to meet up with you all eventually. This move never ends. Spent all weekend waiting for the appliance guy to fix my busted washer. He never showed. Nice. :rolleyes:

I need a cycle computer so I can tell how fast I'm going. I don't know what my average speed is yet. I had a speedometer on my wife's MTB and when I was a total newbie, I was averaging 14mph on the MTB. I could only reach a max of 22.

I wish I could find out how much faster I am on the roadie. I definitely feel faster at least. A shame I couldn't mount the speedometer from the MTB to the road bike.

Will anyone be doing the St. Pete Bike Club rides tomorrow? I intended to do the entry level one today, but I just didn't make it out the door in time. I'll definitely do it tomorrow for sure.

Since I was already up, I decided to ride around the Beach Drive area to check it all out. Man, no wonder the SPBC folks choose that area to ride. It's really pretty! I was blown away by how many cyclists are out and about in this area. I had to keep scanning around to make sure I don't hit anyone (or anyone hits me) when stopping, switching lanes, etc.. I'm not used to that! Heh, while riding along Coffee Pot Road (I think it's called that? the road that eventually transitions from asphalt to nasty brick), I must've stumbled onto some pro training ride. I got swallowed up by a group of fully kitted out riders! Sorry dudes!

So far, I love biking here. It's nice to not be the only cyclist on the road. :)

Avanti & obrien, you guys up for a Brooksville ride on Sunday, Nov. 27th? It starts at Anderson Snow Park, rolls @ 8am, about 54 miles, some hills, but not many. There's about 12 coming and the pace won't be too agressive. It's a very nice rural route. If interested be ready to roll @ 8am.

sorry I was out of town all last week for thanksgiving, I would have loved to have joined you. Avanti won't be riding for a while. he was hurt pretty badly on the saturday morning bike ride. He is looking at probably 2 months of healing.

Sorry to hear that. Tell him I wish for a speedy recovery. Was it a crash on a group ride or vehicle involved?

it was in a group ride. He was out front far enought that luckily no one else hit him. It was an area that we usually sprint, and his clip came undone. He now has 6 broken ribs, broken collar bone, he had fluid in one lung, and a mild concussion. Luckily his helmet did its job and the bike seems to have made it out ok as well. He has a little bit of road rash but not too bad.


Let me know if you guys are going to ride up that way soon. I would like to do it again soon.

OUCH. Guess it could have been worse, but certainly a bad outcome. Hope he heals quickly.

We are doing San Antonio (42 miles) on Saturday if interested. Meet at the ballfield and roll @ 8 am.
