Classic & Vintage - Schwinn Super Sport

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Drove out yesterday and picked up the Super Sport and World Sport that I won in Ebay. The bike looked as good in person as it did in the pictures.

Gotta love Schwinn chrome. Did someone switch out the rims for alloy jobs?

...and rounded fillet brazed tubing joints in Sunset Orange!
The Brooks B-15 looks to be one of the nicest I've ever seen. Thanks for posting the pictures.

The Super Sports always had alloy rims.

Holy Freakin' Time Machine, Batman! Did someone buy that in the '70's and then hermetically seal it in a nitrogen atmosphere to preserve it?
*Sniff* it's really making me miss my old Superior.

I would trade every bike I own for that.

Oh it has a freakishly heavy Schwinn kickstand. I have it leaning on the wall so the front wheel and fork are straight for the picture. Plus, well all my bike pictures have that brick wall as the backdrop.
Now I have the eternal question which is, will I keep it or sell it. I have moved to the basement for 'long term' storage for the time being. I have way to many bikes that are in my keep pile right now. It is one of the coolest bikes I own right now, but I took it for a quick ride and boy that old drive train (heavy RD, shifters, non-ramped/pined gears) feel really clunky.

True. Changing to a closer ratio in back, with a shorter rear derailleur cage, would help somewhat.

I'm not a big fan of fillet brazed Schwinns, but that is one beautiful example. One of the nicest original examples I've seen. At first I was thinking I'd change out the Ashtabula crank to lose some weight. But maybe that bike needs to stay just like it is. Excellent find and glad to see it fell into the right hands.

I had a dark metallic brown one in the 1970's, and yes, by today's standards it's got a "clunky" drivetrain. But back then it was a really cool bike... and today, it's cool again.:)
If you do sell it... you'll get absolutely top dollar. :thumb:
But pleeze... for God's sake sell it to someone who will keep it intact... and keep it away from the souless "fixie" zombies. ;)

I ended up switching to a 700C wheelset with Schwalbe Delta Cruiser 32c tires, Planet Bike fenders, Nitto Albatross handlebar with a Sunlite Touring stem, modern chainring and crank with a Shimano Alfine 8 speed hub. Not bad for a Super Sports!

Yeah there is no way I would let it go to someone who would be thinking 'fixie' or some other abomination. I think the NE Ohio folks need to do another C&V group ride so I have a reason to take her out on the road. ;)

Anytime, just holler and I'll join up for a ride.

I live in Willoughby. If you want to sell it PLEASE, pm me. I have way too many bikes also but I am looking for THE bike and I think that could be it. I would ride it as is. I would NOT even think about making it a fixie. If I have the funds available and the price is reseanable I would buy it. My birthday is next week.

I'm having a real ball with my eBay '73 Super Sport (http://velospace.org/node/23013). I repainted it and put a new Campy Comp Triple drivetrain on it, and with the new components it weighs the same (26 pounds) as my '72 P15-9 Paramount.
These are wonderful bikes, and I'm really happy to see them appreciated. The fillet-brazed straight gauge chromoly frames are extremely strong and durable.
