Southern California - Typical Tour de Foothills weather?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I'm seriously considering entering the Tour de Foothills this year. The ride literally passes within yards of our house, and I've ridden most of the path one way or another and all but one (the San Dimas Canyon climb to La Verne) of the hills, and I've done the mileage --- just not all on the same day.

I'm wondering about the typical Tour de Foothills weather. I realize weather can change from one year to the next, but what is the typical temp like on that day? Main concern is the max temp -- I can handle mid-80s in the afternoon, but 90s by late morning would be a deal breaker for me.

You've climbed MT Baldy Rd?

I've driven the course two years in a row just on my own during the ride. I carried some tools and pump, actually helped about 3 riders by repairing flats and drove 2 strugglers up Mt Baldy Rd.

Both times I driven the course, it's been dark ,gloomy and cool. Almost a drizzle one year! Of course riding up Mt Baldy Rd always feels like 100 degrees!:D

:) A few weeks ago, I climbed Baldy Rd. to Shinn Rd. (Mountain Ave.)... it was a killer climb but I managed it without stopping. :twitchy: Oh, wait, I stopped once... to wait for one of the other riders. :D

That's a pretty darn serious climb!:thumb:.......I sit in one of the turnouts to watch the riders climb that section knowing that's where most riders need to hear some cheering!:D

Yen,

According to weather.com, the average temperatures for Upland on Nov 14 are .. High 74 and Low 49. The same source says the record temps for that day are .. High 84 and Low 30. With the ride starting and ending in Upland and passing through some of the surrounding communities, I would think those numbers should be fairly reliable. It doesn't seem likely you will have to deal with the temperatures that would cause you concern.

If you have done all the climbs, with the exception of the San Dimas climb to LaVerne, that climb should cause no problems for you. It sounds to me like you are ready for the ride. Good luck.

Mr. B.,

I was just trying to give Yen some temperature info. Your response included the possibility of precipitation and touched upon the "feels like" temperature. That sounds much more detailed than my response. :)

A neighbor of mine recently started riding and is considering doing this ride. I might roll along with him to help with mechanical issues, if needed. I think he is looking at the 32ish mile ride, so I may not get to hear you shouting encouragement as we won't get to crawl up Baldy Road.

As far as riding, I know for certain that you spanked me for riding miles during the entire month of May and probably April as well. :D

Hope to see you on the road again one of these days.

Actually my computer is too old and too slow (like me) to pop back and forth on weatherr this and weather that sites so I use the "feels like" system! Much faster!:roflmao2:

Beanz and Dutch, thanks for the "feels like" info and the technical statistics -- and also the laughs. Much appreciated. :)

Mr. Beanz -- I saw a picture of you in Baldy Village. Is there another way to get to the village without riding Baldy Rd.?

GMR, but that's a 21 mile climb with nearly 5,000 ft. Takes me over 2 hours of pretty stiff climbing. That's the course Grrly, JustMe and I did that day.

Mt Baldy is about 7 miles but very stiff climbing, especially past the tunnels. But I'm thinking you are coming from MonteVista/Pauda area. If I ride up Baldy Rd, I come form Euclid Ave/Mountain Ave, not quite as steep as the Pauda section but still.

Only two ways that I know of.:)

Yes, I approach Baldy Rd. from Padua (actually, from Mills at the end of Thompson Creek Trail). I rode only to Shinn Rd. which is, I believe, where the TdF course turns down Mountain Ave/Shinn Rd. to Upland, a fun fast descent.

Maybe do a practice run from Baseline up Pauda then up Baldy to Shinn. That little stretch on Padua adds to the pain and suffering on Baldy.:D....Thompson Trail is a little easier IMO.

OK Mr. Beanz, I'm gonna do the metric. Will you be there to cheer-lead me up the hill?

I will do that practice run later... probably the weekend before the event. I'm coming back after being sick (I'm well now) so I lost some precious training time, but I will just do my best.

How about the wind? Whenever I visit my friends out that way this time of year, that wind is kicking hard enough to blow semi's over.

Couple of times that I've drove the course, ,the wind didn't seem to be a factor. I ride local in the area but the wind seems to be stronger in Fontana/Devore area. Not very noticeable before hitting DeerCreek Park on Banyan and Deer Creek Ave. East of Etiwanda Ave (near the 15 fwy), then you're asking for it. I'm not familiar with the TDF course in this area, but I don't think it goes east of Deer Creek, so should be fine as far as wind.
