Northern California - Local Chad Gerlach back on the streets

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I totally just read that. Breaks my heart. I was really pulling for him to stay clean. What a waste.
Very sad. It's up to him though.
Aw geez, Chad.
(Well, at least this story kept at least one cyclist in recovery sober one more day....)

Just read the story and yes, while sad and a waste of someones talent; you can only help someone who wants to be helped. His own strenth(being a fighter) is also his achilles and shortcoming. We saw the Intervention show and towards the end of the follow-up show, wasn't his wife pregnant? He needs to get it together for his child- hopefully he'll realize that soon.

Addiction is an awful demon to have on your tail.
A really good friend of mine from college just lost his battle to addiction at age 43 this summer.
It is not an easy thing to do under most circumstances and it is really awful to fall back into the old (wrong) ways. My friend had been clean for 5 years, was a conselor in a rehab facility, slipped off the wagon and in less than a year was dead.
I hope that somehow Chad can be helped.

Hey sorry to hear that Brent...You're right, addiction is a Demon. The reasons and the triggers that cause someone to "Fall off the wagon" are quite complex and only through an individuals commitment to ones self, plus intense cognitive therapy and support, it's very hard to beat. Genetic proclivity has a lot to do with it too...
Chad really needs to find and confront himself honestly...
Very sad. Hopefully he can pull through this relapse.

"I told him that just what you have done already has helped a lot of people," said Velasquez, who has been clean for three years and co-owns an auto repair shop. "Your story and your struggle give other people strength, and you're letting a lot of people down."Sounds like a terrific way to put pressure on someone and make them feel terrible at the same time. It's only 10:26am and this paragraph made me crave a drink.

Trudging the road of happy destiny since 12/28/98. Keep coming back! (You too, Chad.)

An update tweeted from Velonews - a ray of hope?

Who knows? It's all in his hands. If he wants to stay clean, really wants it, he will find a way to do so. Otherwise he'll return to the streets.

I have no sympathy for the guy. He knows enough about addiction at this point so he can make the right choice. He is not getting any younger.
