Classic & Vintage - My weekend finds-a couple questions

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I got this Gitane Grand Sport De Luxe. From what I've read about the Grand Sport De Luxe it shouldn't have Campognolo components, but this one has Campognolo derailers. It also has MAFAC "Racer" brakes. Just now I also noticed a "61" on the head tube. Is that the year?

My second find is a Takara Custom 12. Searching the forums I didn't find any posts about a Takara Custom 12. I'm guessing the weird Super Low gear is not stock?

Gitane looks like 1970s to me. Chain is routed backwards on that RD. Entry level bike.

Takara has Suntour components, so that Shimano freewheel is not original, and looks to be much newer than the bike. Takara may be early 1980s, easy enough to look up component codes to see for sure. Takara has the better crankset. Are the rims on the Takara steel or alloy? If alloy, bike is a step up from entry level.

Both should clean up very nicely. Frames appear to be in really good shape.

Unfortunately that Campy's not the good stuff, maybe lasts longer than the Simplex it might have had, but no upgrade.
And the 61 is probably the head-lug downtube angle. Is it on the lower portion? See if you have a 72 up top. The BCM is for Bocama, the lug maker.
The year is probably early 70's, up to '73. Gitane went away from the foil decals in '74.

I thought the chain was french routing or something *giggle*

That will obviously need to be corrected.
