i just picked up this bike a few days ago, and have been doing a single speed swap on it. i had to use the old chain since its smaller width wise than newer chains. the side of the links say 6.5, not sure if that means anything. i had to remove a few links to make it work, but where it is now it seems just a little too loose but i cant get it together with one more link removed....heres a pic

dunno if you can see it very well here. should it be able to connect with one less link and im just being a pansy or what?

way too loose.
the chain should only move vertically by 1cm.

dang. i might have to have someone do that part for me.... i spent almost 2 hours by myself trying to get those old links apart and back together. lol

It's too loose, especially if you intend to ride it as a fixed gear. Those slots look like they should have plenty of adjustment; otherwise just pop in a half-link to make it work.

If removing one link moves the axle past the dropout area then you'll need a "half-link".

Are you using a chain tool? It should take about two minutes or so with the right tool.

i bought a cheap chain tool...its the only one the store on base here carried. i dont have a car so thats all i can get without having to wait for one to ship from online. and actually, the inner threads on the chain tool stripped out. lol

i also realized the fundamental problem. i can loosen the rear wheel and bring it in then connect the right links and put the wheel back. this is the first bike ive touched in like 10 years.
