Mountain Biking - Just good luck with matrix 750's?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

My backup bike, (since i didnt wanna spend much on a backup bike that i only use 1-2 times a week), is a trek 4300. Everythings stock including rims except for the duke fork, shimano xt derailleur and the crankset. 1-2 times a week i take it off 3-7 foot drop offs. The matrix 750 rims have not lost their shape at all. Theyve stood up to the same beating my rhynolites have taken, is this just plain out luck? Or are they pretty cheap tough rims?
(I was under the impression they were extremly bad when i bought the bike.)

weird this thread came up. two days ago i was riding my 4300 and i bunny hopped onto a curb and i didnt get my back wheel all teh way up and it caught the edge and i almost lost control and busted. my back wheel grinded the curb a good 6 ft before i stopped. but upon close inspection it dimpled the outside of my rim but didnt mess up teh alignment. i done it 3 other times teh same day. (somethign about my bad luck) but yeah i havent done any major drops or anything but it suprized me taht it dented my rim.

My Matrix 750's are worthless in my opinion. Both were made improperely. Where the rim strip connects together to make a circular rim, that place is bowed out. They also need truing way too often from regular XC rides.

You guys need to keep perspective on things. You are comparing wheels that came on a $350 (close?) complete bike to a set of wheels that probably cost $180.00.
The wheels are what they are. They are round and they roll. They are cheap. This doesn't mean they are bad, just inexpensive. They are NOT intended to be abused, and riding off a 7'0" drop on that bike is "outside the design parameters" for that bike.
If you want to do that stuff buy a heavy duty hardtail that's designed to withstand that abuse and a set of heavy duty wheels, like some Atomic Laboratories. Approx. cost for the wheelset is $550.
You gotta pay to play if you expect your gear to hold up.
You wheels have held up so far. This is probably because they are less expensive and that usually means they are heavier. Heavy = more material = (usually) more strength.
Also, your 7'0" drop may be a bit of an overexaggeration (maybe not, but "could" be).

My Matrix 750's come out of true with little more than a jump off a curb... I had to have them trued more than a few times already but then again at 270 lbs I'm about as clyde as they get.

wonder what you'd consider a 400+ lb rider? My friend's well over 400, after all.. but he doesn't do any drops or anything.. and he even babies the bike off curbs so it'll last. :)

He'd better or else he'll destroy his bike so quickly. Think of it like this: I'm not sure as to the exact numbers but I think it's something like for every 4 feet you jump down you double your weight(force wise/impactwise). So a 200 Pound rider would be doing a 4 foot drop to equal the downforce that PWRDbyTRD has on his frame just sitting on it.
(will check gravitational force numbers tomorrow...too tired)
