I was experiencing some creaking from the head tube of my Trek 5200 while climbing. I talked to the LBS and he indicated I needed to adjust the bearings in my head tube (he knows I like to work on what I can). The problem was I had never worked on a threadless fork / steerer before. I went to the Barnett manual and I didn't really find an detail on adjusting the bearings (it is ~ 30 pages so maybe I missed it). Anyway, I searched the web and found an aritcle by Park Tools. I finally figure out that top bolt in the stem actually pulls the steerer tube via the star nut but you must loosen the stem pinch bolts as the stem ring acts as a spacer. Once I figured this out the threadless headset made sense to me!!!
Needless to say I was able to adjust the headset and I lost the annloying "creaking". I just love it when I learn something new!
