Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Rear hub: Dura Ace or Surly?

Between DA and Surly, which one is better for general street riding? I am not sure if DA is sealed cartridge bearings (as surly is). Does this matter much?

I would go with surly, cheaper and just as nice... Plus I don't think DA comes in a flip flop does it??

DA does come in a flip flop version, both in short and high flange. I went through the same dilema when I built up my rear wheel, I went with Surly. I liked the sealed bearings (DA are loose balls) and the price was cheaper. For street use I would say go for Surly for cheaper hubs, or save up and get Phils. I'm sure the DA are great hubs but for general street riding I decided I would rather have something with sealed cartridge bearings.

**** DA
I like Surly, but be carefull when you're tightening the track nuts - last weekend I cracked the outside cone nuts (unsure of exact term, the ones that come into contact with the dropouts on the inside) on both sides of my hub. It ended up being a huge hassle.

I've also broken one of those on my surly hub. The washer/plate/thingy that actually touches the bearings that the cone nuts tighten(?) against also broke on my hub causing my bearing on that side to become totally wrecked. Some primo bmx hub bearings and some washers and some jb weld holding on the cog since the threads stripped and im still riding my surly!
I think they're just too wide - that probably means that you have less slippage when it's tightened down, but makes them more likely to break...

D/A high flange hubs are SUHWHEEEEET! i have phils, and i have D/As. the phils are super smooth, and i got them for foul weather; even though i ran my D/A wheel through three boston winters with no problems. i was going to get surlys instead of phils, but when i was looking to get new wheels, no shop in boston had the surlys in stock, so i went with phil.
the dura ace wheels are silky smooth, and totally durable for street use.
phils = love. dura ace = love. surly = no clue.

Absolutely. The d/a and phil hubs are MUCH higher quality than those surlys. It's always worth looking around ebay as well for suntour, campy, etc...
off topic, but I am considering buying Royce hubs next
