I've been trawling Ebay and seen a cheap Ultegra rear deraileur and was wondering if it would be compatible with my near new Tiagra cluster? The same guy had a cheap Ultegra cluster but my Tiagra has only done a couple of hundred kms and it seems like a waste to get rid of it whereas the bike shop did manage to service my rear deraileur but said it will need replacing in the not too distant future. I presume my near new chain will be compatible? The parts on Ebay are new and not second hand.

Short answer is maybe. It depends on what kind of derailleur and what teeth gearing you have both front and rear. It's not a matter of level of derailleur as much as specific type and if you're exceeding tooth capacity and such. In general, if you have a triple chainring front crank, you'll need a GS type derailleur which has a longer cage.
