Classic & Vintage - Anyone near Houston have Pedal Taps?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Trying to change from French (14mmx1.25) to virtually everyone else (9/16-20) on a Vintage Peugeot tandem. I've read you can just run the more standard taps through the cranks and all is good. (Or am I wrong?

I don't want to spend $35+ for the Park Tools tap set, and EVERYONE is out of stock on the cheaper Icetoolz sets.

Even hit up 3 bike shops on Sunday and they looked at me like I was crazy when I mentioned pedal taps. (That scares me...Only one shop even knew what I was talking about.)

Anyway - if anyone is in Houston or near Houston I can bring the two sets of cranks by and we can run the taps through in no time. I'll supply a 6 or 12 pack or reasonable amnount of cash for the time.

Or, if someone could direct me to a shop with the icetoolz set in stock I'd be happy to buy them too.

They seem hard to come by.
I messed up my cranks with the french pedals.

Can't say for sure he has them but I would try Dan Kan over at Procycles off of N. Shepherd. A wealth of knowledge and who I always go to for my C&V needs.

To do a proper job of it, you need to install a helicoil. Running a tap alone will not hold long term.

Thats what I was afraid of, the thread size is pretty close to 9/16 to begin with. I'm not set on keeping the original cranks, but wasn't sure I wanted to buy a replacement tandem crankset. The helicoil kits for cranks are really pricey, and I'd need two.
