Classic & Vintage - Campy Down Tube Shifters

Bought my first bike with down tube shifters.

They are Campy and I believe either a 7 or 8 speed and indexed.

Can anyone give me any details? Year, which model in the campy line, friction possible, etc etc...

Not 100% certain, but they look very similar to a set of Athena shifters I had on a bike I used to own. That bike was a 1990, so I think you're close to that with those.

RobbieTunes has a set of those in the mail. Came off a 1995 Bianchi Trofeo. From what I found they're Syncro shifters, mine happened to be Stratos.

Based on the very fine finish, I think they could be C-Record.

They look identical to the Athena shifters I have on one of my Puchs.

Thanks guys, just trying to get a better understanding of my grupo. They came on an 89/90ish Gios Compact Pro. The Crank is Athena while the fd is Record and rd is Chorus

They are early 90 Record shifters. These shifters were also used with the Chorus and Athena groups. The lower end (Mirage?) groups used the same design but painted and without cable adjuster.
These work very good and are index only. I used a set on my beater bike for about 10 years.

If you don't like reaching down to the downtube shifters you can use Kelly Take-Offs to bring those shifters up to your levers. You can still use your vintage shifters and vintage levers, and have near modern ERGO convenience. You'll also learn that your vintage levers make integrated levers look silly from a pure braking standpoint, old school is lighter too, even with the weight of the Take-Offs.

Good luck if you take them apart. I'm having a fine time finding a diagram for putting them back together. Nice shifters, though. The later ones (thanks, stausty) have more info available. The early ones, Synchro 1, have a lever that switches them to friction. The next models, Synchro 2, have a knurled knob you turn to do the same. Campy modified them somewhat when they went to 8-speed, and they worked a lot better. Almost all of them can be coverted from 6 to 9 speeds using the colored collar.

I don't think those are Synchro. they look more like the 8 or 9spd shifters from the mid to late
'90s. I do not recall Synchro havinbg an adjusting barrel on top of the shifter where the cable goes in. Synchro ahd the small lever or the wheel on the side to swithc to friction.

there are shifters like these in the 1999 spare parts catalog listed as Record (not C, just record)

Thanks for all the info guys! From an aesthetics standpoint I love them. I bought the bike with every intention of keeping it as "old school" as possible. However I keep thinking about how sweet it would be to just change everything out and put a Record 9 or 10 speed grupo on it with brifters.

This is correct, I believe these particular models dated from 1991/92 to 1995. I believe the internals varied slightly from 1993-1995 compared to the pre-'93 ones (extra spring or something). No, syncro coloured gears cannot be used with these shifters but I believe 7/8/9/10 are all doable.

these are campy Record Syncro II (circa: '92). on my Tommasini. They're 8-speed and shift just fine.

That's a beautiful bike. I am considering taking my compact pro back in time and replacing the campagnolo ergo with index downtube shifters. Your photos just about pushed me over the finish line.

Once I got these 7-spd's together, I went ahead and put a set of 6-sp Syncro I's together,
and taped 'em up for preservation (of my sanity). Then I got an 8-sp set in the mail. Simpler.

Had my wife's 89 Raleigh Scott Tinley ride off on it's own last week. Lost an 82 trek in June. SUCKS to be me. We have an Open carport and no room in the small house for the bikes and aparently someone knows we're never home (kids, plays, athletics etc...) I'm tempted to find a nice classic ride, hang it up in the garage with a 220V wire attached and a big pan of salt water on the floor. Bet I'd find out who's been dropping by to "visit"
