Hey guys, just to start it off, i'm a newbie to road biking or biking in general. I just bought a CAAD9-6 and next to the gear shifters are little adjusters on the cable that connects the gear shifters to front and rear derailleur. My questions are, What are those adjusters for? and when would you use adjust it? Also, is turning it counterclockwise making it tighter like a spoke nipple?
I know this is a newbie question and i tried googling it but i could not find the exact name for that. Thank you guys for your help!

It sounds like you are describing the "Barrel-Adjusters." These do make the cables tighter, or looser. This would be used should your cables settle & stretch, which you would notice if your bike started to miss shifts or you heard rubbing noises from the chain impacting the front-derailleur.

The barrel-adjusters that come with the shifters have a rather limited range. If more adjustability is needed, one can attach an inline barrel-adjuster into the cable-line.
