I am looking for recommendations on Late Fall/Winter Jacket that works well for our cooler temp ranges, and can handle on/off showers (not necessarily heavier rain, although I did get caught in a couple of good downpours last year).

I've done the typical searches in the forum for jacket recommendations, but haven't found specific winter jacket recommendations for the Sacramento foothills area. My old REI Novara rain jacket just doesn't breathe enough.

thanks!

Umm. Ok. I like the fluorescent Specialized one my wife got me for Xmas last year. I have a Novara too but haven't worn it since she got me that one. It breathes, fits my form better and the rubber has a perfect tack (I like their arm warmers for that very reason).

I just got a new jacket (2 actually). Haven't used them yet as I have picked up some sort of flu type bug (getting better, wasn't as bad as it could have been, still hoping to be well enough to ride Saturday).

how much are you looking to spend on the jacket?

probably 150 +/- if it's worth it.

Try checking out Wiggle in the UK. They have a large selection of waterproof cycling jackets. It takes around a week to a week and a half for the order to make it to your door but they always have something on sale + free shipping for $80 + orders....

This isn't exactly what you asked about but I'll chime in anyway in case it's helpful ..

I made it through last winter with a combination of wool base layer (smartwool brand, $70), heavy long sleeved jersey (cannondale, maybe $80 or so), and very light wind/rain jacket (forget which brand, cost me around $50 though)

This got me through a 1.5 hour each way commute in temps down to the high 30s. Anything above 50 and I would skip the wool layer though. Also many times I would only keep the wind jacket on for the first 5 miles or so until I was warm enough to remove it.

The jacket doesn't breath at all but is great at blocking the wind on those super cold days or else just when you're descending. It's also rain proof although I only rode with it in the rain only a couple times. Very effective at keeping the rain out but since it doesn't breath it might be miserable after too long with sweat building up inside.

I suspect I may run a bit warmer than most people (ie need fewer layers) so ymmv there. Also my setup was geared more toward cold rather than wet so if you really need something for the rain then completely disregard this ;)

thanks....I was thinking of something along the lines of the Gore Phantom. REI has it on sale as well.
