If you read the sidebar the guy had considerable backcountry experience.He and his companions got cocky.It happens.I lived in Big Cottonwood Canyon (google it) for a few years and you can get careless with big snow after seeing hundreds of inches every year.Not defending it but it happens.Honestly I didn't like the looks of the snow at the beginning of the video.Too chunky and damp.

Backcountry experience doesn't equate to backcountry smarts. If they had dug a pit and knew how to read the snow he never would have gone over the edge. It freekin' fractured on the first turn. Bozos.

Like they say, incredibly lucky he didn't hit anything (went between two cliff bands 30m tall) and his glove came off right where he landed and the people he was with were experienced enough to get him out in four and a half minutes. Also like the complete fluke that he was uncovered with the camera pointing up at them - just like Hollywood.

i never thought i was claustrophobic until i watched that. :twitchy:
virgin snow is sooooo nice, but that's why I stay out of the backcountry.

That is my greatest fear. Both Heather and I have ava-lungs, beacons, and the knowledge to use them, but I would never want to be burried. What a horible way to spend any time.

XR2, are you still in Utah?
