General Cycling Discussion - Kona Lava Dome by Joe Murray

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I have an original Lava Dome from 1988 by designer Joe Murray. Original components but has been hand painted black. What would something like this be worth realistically? I may try to restore the original paint job underneath (was blue)
I just confirmed with Kona through the serial number that it is a 1992 model...

If you're asking how much it would sell for on ebay, the answer is not that much. The Lava Dome was too successful for prices to be high - the design stayed in production for years and the bikes don't die. The Lava Dome is still an excellent hard tail frame by today's standards so people do buy them - typically the bike goes for $200, then riders often spend several times more than that on powder coating, new wheels, having the frame re-worked to take disc brakes, etc. I have one myself and it's a wonderful bike, but no, it's not going to make you rich.

88 would be very early for a Kona branded bike. In fact it might be impossible - back then Lava Domes where shipping with TDG branding. In fact I'd say *definitely* impossible, except that mine has both TDG *and* Kona branding.

Why worry about the worth of it? A Lava Dome in its day was not a bad bike. And I have a 92 Kona Explosif that was a good bike when I bought it and is still a good bike. When it gets taken on rides- it gets a lot of attention from the "OLD" hands at mountain biking.
