Southern California - Just moved to LA need CHEAP/FREE bike info

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I just moved to Los Angeles (Los Feliz/Hollywood) and pretty much have nothing. I packed my duffel bag and hitch hiked from Iowa because I had literally nothing left there.

I am looking for work, and have interviews set up already but need to get decent transportation. I'm wondering if anyone knows of a place where I can get a really really cheap or even free bike. At this point I don't care what style, brand, or anything, I just want to be on a bike again and not walk so incredibly long to everywhere I go.

If anyone knows where I might be able to achieve this goal I would be so incredibly thankful.

I usually don't ask people to help out like this but I am in a crap situation at the moment and could use a hand.

Go to the Bicycle Kitchen on Melrose and Heliotrope(next to Vermont)

They will help you build a bike for little or no money, whatever you can afford

Freecycle or the free section in craigslist, also try the Bike Oven in Highland Park.

Interesting. It seems most people are hitch hiking from California to Iowa, Ohio, Arkansas because they have nothing and nothing can get you more out there. Still, welcome to the area and good luck!

Just went to my mom's house the other day and saw some crappy walmart type mountain bike in her garage...if you're more than welcome to have it. It's black and pink though...:twitchy:

No I haven't got a bike yet :-(

I haven't had a spare dime to my name since I've been here. Hopefully things start working out soon.

We just donated 12 bikes to the kitchen. I hope they can set you up since this is why we gave them the bikes to start with.

How tall are you? What size bike to you ride?

How tall are you? What size bike to you ride? I generally ride a 54 or 56cm frame. 5' 11" with short legs.

I will walk down to the kitchen tomorrow, I completely forgot about it. I got a job in Culver City today so hopefully I'll be able to find a place to live close enough that I can commute once I get a bike. No idea how long it will be before I have enough cash for a place, or a bike, though.

Hey I know that there are lots of bikes at the Oven right now! Ask for John Harv...323 223 8020

http://bikeoven.com/

Also, just ask for a bike in the "free" section of Craigslist. If it needs work, take it to the Oven and explain your situation.

I got a bike thanks to Rip Van Winkle. I just spent almost 2 hours trying to plot the best possible commuting route and will get started with my life as a cyclist once again tomorrow. It felt so good to be in the saddle again. Thanks Rip Van Winkle!

I will be taking your (the people who posted here) advice about the bike kitchen and checking it out in the future.

Thanks everyone for all the help.

4th street to Cochran, south to Venice, and west to Culver City. I used to ride it all the time. I'm glad that the bike is working out for you. Keep me posted.
