Congrats to you too! The moon was awesome from what I could see through the sand storm. Wow, that was some some wind. While descending Townes Pass it blew me from the center of our lane all the way over to the fog line in the opposing lane. Yikes!

Yeah, it was awefully windy. Lots of people were getting blown around. Even on the tandem it was pretty bad. We barely averaged 10mph from Furnace Creek to Shoshone!

I ran a couple different tires/wheels. I stared on 25mm Conti GP4000 clinchers running 120psi. Those were on my Zipp 404's and HED wheels. I also used Mavic tubular's with 23mm Vittoria Corsa Evos. I believe the pressure on the Vittoria's was somewhere around 130-140psi

Did you climb on the light tires and ride the flatter sections on the Zipps or HEDs? They all held up OK? We've been running 23c TriComps @140 with a 300 lb. team and they've been great. One pinch flat on a rock the size of my thumb. Must have hit it just right. Been coveting the Corsa clinchers for my single, but can't justify the cost for just riding around.

Actually I was more worried about the wind with the aero wheels rather than the climbing. That HED wheel is like a sail in the wind! Unfortunately I ruined the front Corsa at about 45mph on the descent into Kelso. That was pretty exciting.

Actually, now that I think about it, the kids and I had a pretty good time without the 50 MPH winds!

What weekend is the 600k? Bobolink would be awesome! I have a new stoker but I don't know if she would be up for that long of a ride yet. I know if I asked her, she'd say yes. She's an ultra-runner so I'm not woried about her condition but she hasn't even riden a century yet. A 600k might be a little long for her first bike ride over 30 miles. ;)
Yeah, we were first and we set a course record. The record is pretty soft though, because of the weather. i'm sure it'll be broken before too long. Our two tandem record was broken by 4 minutes this year! Harruumph!:) Records are meant to be broken but It'd be really nice to have a record last more than one year...

We've been running 23c TriComps @140 with a 300 lb. team and they've been great.
Are the 23c wide enough for a tandem? I have mostly used 25c Gatorskins. I have a 25c Rubino Pro on the back and it seems really big and rides softer than the Gatorskins which I find all Conti tires to ride stiff.
Interested in the 23c Tricomps though, we weigh 250 lbs.

Yeah, pretty much. It went flat suddenly so I had to stop the bike from full speed on the flat tire. That section of road is so horrible that I was worried that the rim would be distroyed. The tire stayed on but it got so hot that the glue melted!

I've used those Tricomps on my singles for years and put them on our tandem because I sometimes ride my single with a local tandem racing team - more record holder types - tremendous fun holding their wheel. Anyway, they run the same Tricomps on their tandem and are probably 25 lbs. heavier, so thought I'd give it them a try - same tires on all bikes then.

What difference is that? Faster? Smoother? Both?
Like most I am always trying to find that balance of low rolling resistance, suppleness, grip and reasonable life. I am willing to sacrifce some life for the others. I have found on my single bike Michelin Pro2 and now Pro3 has been the best for me but I don't think its a tire that would be suitable on a tandem. I think the rear tread would be gone in no time. The Pro3s are really getting a bad rap comapred to the Pro2 but I haven't any problem with them yet.

I run the 23's on my bike quite often and we're closer to 400lbs than 350lbs. :) If I had to do it over again, I would have put on some 25mm wheels/tires for the descent into Kelso. Just because the road is so bad. It's basically just and oiled bed of rocks...

I talked to Bobolink this afternoon, I think she was in the airport on her way back to China. She probably wont be back until next year's 508 or RAAM, but I am trying to con her into riding the PCH 1000k next April.
Oh, just go ahead and ask your new stoker to ride the 600 - you can always bailout when you ride by your house if it proves to be an issue. Just because the ride is 12.5 times longer than her longest to date what makes you think it would be a little long for her? :lol:

By looking at it you could certainly come to that conclusion. I don't think that is what happened though because I hadn't touched the brakes prior to the tire failing. I think it heated up like that just getting the bike stopped. I have no problem using the front brake even though the tire is completely flat. Rolling over that really bad pavement with the flat tire at 40+mph kind of shredded it.
