hello, i just purchased (used) my first road bike. after weeks and weeks of test riding bikes in every shop in seattle and portland, i went used... and found a custom italian columbus genius steel frame campy chorus/record 9 speed, campy proton wheels, cane creek brakes, ritchey wcs stem/bars/etc.. for less than 1K. i am in love. rides like a dream.

however, it is a double with a campy record 11/21 steel/titanium rear cassette. given my locale, i am needing to set this bike up so it is much more hill/climbing friendly... asking as a novice, what are my options? i DONT want to put a triple on, as i'd have to replace the whole shebang... too much dinero.

the bike currently is set up with:

Chorus 9 speed ergo shifters/brake levers
Chorus front and rear derailleur
Record carbon Italian bb
new set of Record silver cranks 172.5mm

is the cheapest solution to put on a different cassette? if so, what rear cassettes are easily compatible with this set up?

what is involved in upgrading to 10 speeds?

any input appreciated! thx.

Changing to a 10s will involve new cassette, chainrings, chain and shifters at a minimum. The 9s current offerings are 12-23, 13-23, 13-26, 13-28 and 14-28. My guess is that the 13-28 and 14-28 equire the longer cage triple derailleur. I would go with the 13-26 if you need really hill friendly gearing, and 12-23 if you just need something a little easier than the 11-21.

A well stocked and well managed LBS may swap the cassette and rear deraillier.
