Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hi I'm thinking about taking up road racing, I'm 20 years old and I'm wondering what the average speeds are in a road race. I'm trying to get an idea of how fast I need to go to be competitive in a road race. Obviously speeds will vary depending on the conditions and level of competition, but say ... a sunny day and just racing for a local club.

Start out with a time trial, maybe a 22k. This is against the clock, rather than other riders, and will allow you to guage your speed relative to the rest of the field. It is also safer than a mass start race, with less chance of crashing or getting tripped by devious tactics.
Time trials are pretty common events, your local club will run them.
