What's wrong with a top-notch athlete taking on a new challenge?
Granted Cancellara is a very tough man to beat. But if that's your mentality, you could also think "zomg no one can beat Cavendish," so why race in the first place?

Just that as a known sprinter, one would think Boonen would take on Cavendish.

Erm... the idea is that he's going to change his training regimen, and pretty much spend all of next year working on his TT skills. A big chunk of TT'ing is also strategy and bike handling, skills that can be developed.
Pro cyclists also do change disciplines, many times with success. Lots of well-known GC guys started out with mountain bike racing, and there are also some track cyclists who've made an excellent showing lately, e.g. Bradley Wiggins.
Besides, it's not like he's saying wants to lose 75 pounds and become a climber.
And the worst case scenario is that it doesn't work out, and he decides to go back to sprinting. I say he should go for it.

Boonen never was and never claimed to be a pure sprinter in the vein of Cavendish. What he could do though is ride someone like Cav off his wheel at Flanders or Roubaix. An amazing talent who chooses like some of us to partake in the occasional illegal substance. BFD. What he choose to do in his free time is his frickin'g business.

you don't think boonen's coke snorting hurt his team at the TDF? boonen himself didn't ride anyone off his wheel and his team was in disarray. better rethink that one :eek:.

Boonen was sick most of the TDF and a couple crashes didn't help things. Quick Step isn't much of a GT team anyway so I'm not sure what your point is. You also conveniently edited out my mention of Flanders and Roubaix.

boonen got his third coke positive after his classic wins and didn't even know if he would be able to enter the TDF until a few days before and then he rode like crap. oh and he wasn't allowed to race the TDF the year before for another coke positive.
you don't think that effected his TDF performance or that of his team? huh :eek:?

I have no problem calling him on illicit drug use, but I fail to see what that has to do with his decision to switch disciplines.
It probably depends upon the length of the TT. I could see him doing well on a short one.

Hmmm,
Cippolini always knew better than to make bold claims in the TT specialist arena.I would put more money on Jens Voight than I would Boonen in a real TT.
Can anybody else suggest top favorites in the TT's? My favorite TT guy of all time was MIguel Indurain, but after that, Mr Lance at his best in 2000 to 2004, then Rominger, Lemond, and the Panasonic team back in the 80's.OH! I forgot, Bernard Hinault and Francesco MOser, and Roche were top class TT guys as well.
