I know NOTHING about high end road bikes but what do most folks think of the Trek high end line of Tour bikes, the Madone 5.9's and the Time Trial bike? Are they really a big part of the success or is it 99.9% the rider at that point? Is it common knowledge other's are "better?" How much difference is design really is there for the bikes at this high a level...

Totally ignorant and curious...

i loved Phonak's BMC and Mayo Orbea (my next bike)

BMC's Phonak Team Issue is very well thought out and IMO take the engineering crown.
Some of the bikes are just stupidly light, would'nt trust a production bike thats that light..

Best bike is always the one that fits

Ill put a vote in for Softride... Even though they are illegal due to the aerodynamic advantage. The carbon-fiber beam takes the bumps out of the road, leaving you on your seat to power through. btw, I don't find them bouncy.

the BMC totally takes the cake for mechanically cool bike of the 04 tdf. while they were nicely crash-tested, it's too bad they didn't get to shine in the end.

otherwise, nothing really sparked my interest as being all that cool.

nice bikes though, sure.

I'd love to get my hands on the BMC Team Phonak (http://www.competitivecyclist.com/za/CCY?PAGE=PRODUCT&PRODUCT.ID=1001) frame! At first I wasn't fond of the color scheme, but they've grown on me.

Ooh La La, Thomas Voeckler's "Brioches La Boulangère Time VXRS", what a name. Not a bike, it is a unit.

Mayo's Orbea Orca
I prefer Orbea's Starship Carbon - the standard Euskaltel team bike.

But my favourite bike this year was probably Gerolsteiner's Wilier Triestina (http://www.cyclingnews.com/teamtech04.php?id=tech/2004/probikes/gerolsteiner_wilier).

Dogma for sure.

While I don't like the Alessio-Bianchi color scheme, I have a EV3 and love it top to bottom.

I could use a Madone SSL OCLV55 to help drag my carcass over the mounds we have here in Kentucky. :o

No respect for Wilier after they flat-out lied about Rebeillin's carbon "Wilier prototype" that he won Amstel, Fleche Wallone and L-B-L on. It is a painted SCOTT CR1.

Time looks sharp- can't wait to ride one to check it out

It's no big deal that they ride rebadged Scotts.

The big deal is that Wilier totally lied when if Rebellin's bike was really a Wilier. They said it was really a Wilier, to which SCOTT released a statement confirming it was the CR1 and that they were happy to keep quiet, understand sponsorship agreements but would not stand for flat-out lies or misrepresentation of their product.

I agree with Scott. It also makes you wonder what else Wilier lies about doesn't it?

Ha! I wanted to edit. I'm all confused now. :)

You've got a good eye, Racer. Help me sort this out... The Scott/Wilier prototype that Rebellin rode, was ridden by a few of the G'steiner riders at the Tour, right? But it isn't the same as the actual team bike, I don't think (see the link I've posted). My understanding is that the team bike is way low on carbon fibre, which I dig. It's not like the Scott you've linked to above.

I'm definitely in the habit of falling for liars. So, nothing surprises me anymore. ;)

I went round to a LBS near where I work today after finding out that they stock Orbea just to take a peek. The shop had the BMC and the Orbea bikes ridden in the tour. Wish I was a rich man ...

A lot of the frames mentioned in this thread are offered at wrench science. Mac a co-worker has an Orbea found out today. Went all excited for a De Rosa, rode it and hated it...then rode the Orbea...swears by it. Great a new model added to the list.

Mayo's Orbea Orca

Just bought an Orca (silver and blue) and I reeeeeeeeely like it! I totaled my Cinelli in a bad accident last week and replaced with the Orca. Very stiff but the Carbon dampens so much better than the Starship tubing did it's like riding on air. Without peds and cages 15lb10oz. With peds/cages/comp/hrm 17lb6oz.

dont know about top 5 but the best bike there in my opinion was the new, all carbon 2005 Specialized Tarmac which was ridding by Mario Cipollini and the rest of the Domina Vacanze team

My impression of the BMC bike ridden by Phonak was not that hot, especially when Tyler complained about all the mechanical failures that occurred with them. This could be more mechanic-related, and not necessarily BMC's fault however. I'd honestly never heard of BMC until this year.

Yeah the Triestina is a scandium frame. I actually hadn't noticed what frame Gerolsteiner rode in the Tour...maybe somone else will know.
I would never give money to a company so openly decietful so I scratch them off my list. SCOTT, however, has a real gem with that CR1.

That's an interesting seat-tube but those Stronglight cranks are the cat's meow! They look great with the Campy Record setup and the Cosmic wheels.

My FBS carries those Scott CR1 Teams and they are definately very nice bikes. Apparently they're selling like hotcakes. The FBS can't seem to keep them in stock long enough. They sold a good half-dozen in the past few weeks.

The Specialized Tarmac is not full carbon, it is a carbon aluminum. Still very cool though.

Now that is a nice bike.

I do like the Cervellos that CSC rode.

Specialized test rode a full carbon Tarmac this year at the TdF. You could see Simeoni riding one when Lance wouldn't let him get away.

are pretty much all the bikes in the tour carbon nowdays, or is there a good mix of all materials?

does anyone at all ride steel?

TimB
07-28-04, 03:02 PM
Steel is just not fashionable any longer and the riders want the lightest possible bike from their sponsor.
Since Cannondale made the 613 and made a big noise about it being easy to built it to 6.8kgs, everyone going Carbon mad.
I think evey team had carbon bikes this year except Saeco whose Carbon AL mix is pretty unique.
Colnago teams were riding C50's
CSC all used R2.5 Cervelo's
Euskatel had a special light weight AL bike for Mayo to use in the mountains but he prefered the Orca anyways.
Posties used the Madone SSL's (it appears)
Bianchi used carbon frames.

No Litespeeds in sight
No Merlins
No Steel anywhere except in axles and Bearings (maybe)

It seems carbon really has arrived now and has taken over the peloton.

uh not quite - this year's Tarmac is full carbon - they removed the alum section.
