Utility Cycling - Tandem conversion to utility bike?

I was wondering if anyone has ever done one of these? Seems like it might be as useful and
effective as say a Big Dummy with less cost and work? Just curious...

Yes they have, I think I've seena pic in this UTILITY group. Keep looking and if I find it first I'll post back here with a link. I am interested in this also. Craigslist has had a few in the last couple of months too, tandema that is!

I've seen it discussed several times, and I still have an old Huffy tandem in the garage that I bought for this purpose, but I haven't actually seen it DONE.

I am looking at a tandem that uses 26 wheels for duty as a cargo bike that I can convert to a tandem with not a lot of hassle when a stoker is available.
Any tips?

We ordered a tandem/utility bike from UK. We don't have it yet, so I can't say anything real about it. We should get it in two to three weeks, I hope.

I've got one. Turned our Electra tandem into an xtracycle- works great but you do have to plan your uturns in advance :)

Yeah, we don't plan on doing the tour de france with it, but for general errands and fun around town, it's perfect :)

The second seat of my tandem is not up for conversion. Somewhere on this site is a post by me ~5 years ago saying I didn't get the Xtracycle thing. I do now and I like the xtracycle equipped tandem a lot but only so I could put a Stokemonkey in front of the back wheel. For haulingb I am not sure you can beat the Bob Yak that is behind our Kent. That isn't the regular Bob Sak and that load is not representative of the 100lbs+ that we routinely void the warranty with.

Wow, in a few years they might attempt two kids on the back of that thing...*and* groceries, then it *will* be heavy. Three kids...and then it'll be towing a trailer :-)

What are you envisioning? I happen to have one, though not the Adams brand. I don't remember what it's called.

In the meantime, I'm still pretty happy using my Burley kiddie trailer to haul stuff. I live in the suburbs, and there's room to keep it, and there's room to drive it on the roads around here. I like the way it doesn't affect bike handling. I often don't feel it at all, except when it's carrying a lot of stuff.

What I'm envisioning is a platform with drop-downs that you can put wideloader-style bars on. The platform could attach at the seatpost, the stem, and p-clamped to the rear triangle. It could be made compatible with Xtracycle so the wideloader bags, snap deck, kids seats, etc. would fit.

The Trail-a-Bike hitch is very stout. I bet a properly designed conversion would carry at least a couple hundred pounds, particularly if the weight was balanced over the rear wheel. This would allow people to easily convert virtually any bike to a cargo bike and remove the cargo bike portion when not needed. Besides, many, many people already have a Trail-a-Bike and it would make it even that much more useful.

I don't have any fabrication skills, otherwise I would make one myself...

It would be much quicker if he kept the stoker cranks. Pedals come on and off pretty quickly. If you used a different captain's seat post and saddle, then you could just drop in the tandem captain's saddle, and stoker bars as an assembly, and thus avoid disturbing the adjustment of the stoker stem.
