Hey guys, i just bought a spec. tricross comp triple....it has a scuff on the carbon fibre seat stay--what do u guys think??

You'd be better off asking for advice in the road forum - carbon bikes are almost the rule there, whereas in cross they're still largely avoided because of the need for bikes that survive crashing.

Damages like that are nearly impossible to diagnose via pictures. Do yourself a huge favor and take it to a shop you trust and have them actually look and feel it. Chances are pretty good that it's just on the clear coating, but seriously, it's your life and family jewels on the line, so don't play the odds on this one.

if your seatstay fails, it will not be catastrophic.
Take a quarter and tap the stay where the scuffs are. If it sounds real dull, then its cracked. Tap the other side so you can compare the sounds.

Comp rider here. Sound will be dull bc of Zertz inserts. Theoretically, these dampen the vibration. Theoretically.
Good news is that that seatstays asembly is essentially a rear "fork", bonded into dropouts and short tube right behind the seat. That upper joint is beautifully, unapologetically crudely finished. This "fork" is designed to be replaced if needed, instead of having entire frame less than perfect (provided parts are still being made), and that was the only thing that reconciled me with carbon in the rear. Not that I will ever race it in mud.....
Show it to the professionals and watch it carefully still.

Especially good post from sci femme! I try to avoid carbon stays because of the potential for damage - and because I don't believe they're worth a damn. But it's interesting to know the Spesh, despite their tendency to go for gimmicky designs, thought this one out.
