OK, so going on 3 months now and still not healed. I thought it was good a couple weeks ago, did an easy ride that went well, but followed up with a hard ride that hurt. Haven't riden since but hurt it playing gymnastics with my kids.

I am really having a hard time isolating it to let it heal. Gonna try real hard for 2 more weeks and I that doesn't get it, orthopedic time. Man does this bad juju suck.

What was the exact injury? A year after my pelvis fractures I couldn't ride on grass, four years out now it's fine (some comfort, eh?)

But . . . your retired?! :wtf:

For tendonitis an Orthopedic will tell you to rest, give you anti-inflammatory and maybe send you to PT. It will still take a long time to get rid of. And if you didn't find the underlying cause -- it will come right back.

I know how frustrated you feel. I wish there was some magic bullet, believe me I've searched, there isn't. Mine use to hurt when I ride, hurt when I rest and feel like it was never going to subside. Find the underlying cause (I said that before -- it must be important) and have patience! :twitchy:

The cause was too high a saddle on a long and brutal ride. Since then I haven't let it heal long enough. Even though I try. It isn't easy.

Anything with "itis" on the end, I swear, takes forever. I'm dealing with the same frustration with plantar fasciitis. Mine is better but it is taking a long time to resolve.

Mine came on right after the Dare as well. I felt it during the ride...like I overstretched my arch and then it was the typical painful heel the following week.

I'm thinking you threw that bad juju dust my way during that meal !!!!!!

seems to make no sense why you just dont go to the doc and see what they got to say. you have messed around with too long with little positive result. later.

Agreed Aham but the problem is they are going to say you have to rest it (99%). I haven't done that very well, or not nearly well enough. With or without the MRI that's what they're going to say.

I told my PhD physical therapist friend that I wanted a brace to reduce range of motion and to remind me not to leap up stairs etc, and she said no way ... it would cause more problems. Just "REST IT"! I explained I was really trying hard and didn't think I was capable and she raged on my some more ... lol. So, still icing and trying real hard not to use it much.

CC - Back in July I experience sharp pain in my right knee. I stopped riding and went to my Orth doc. They took x-rays and did an MRI. They found two cysts in the interior side of my knee. He wrote a script for PT. So for the next month, 3 times a week, I did PT. We did ultrasound, strengthening exercises, and stretching of the hamstrings and hip flexors. Since then, I was able to ride pain free in that knee. Before each ride I stretch and put some bengay on the knee to help loosen the knee up.
Also I have adjusted my saddle height, saddle position foreward & aft and pedal position, side to side and forward and aft.
One ofthe last things the doctor said was for me to remember that I'm 50+ NOT 20-30. If I want to stay active, I'm going to have to listen to what my body is telling me.

Heal up, relax and get ready for next season.

but followed up with a hard ride that hurt.
Why this? Why are you doing hard rides at all?

I'm no medical expert (though I did pass a Holiday Inn Express on the way to work this morning), but are you seeing a pattern here that you are aggravating this injury with some need for a ride that basically re-injures your knee?

Let it heal. There is nothing to prove except that you can screw your leg up even more.

Didn't you tell me it was like 2 mm higher? I really don't think that would be enough to cause this! I'd look into things further.

+1 I'm having to be patient with my darned knee...it sucks, but not as bad as it would if I had to quit riding forever. HTFU and relax. ;)

HTFU and relax. ;)

I think Frankie Goes To Hollywood wrote a song back in the 80's about ColorChange's knee.

Relax, don't do it.... you've got tendonitis.....
Relax, don't do it.... when you wanna ride......

Yeah, Pay me instead ...I'll tell you exactly what they're going to say. cough*cough* Our age just puts us in a slower healing mode. Oh, I was going to ask you if you're icing it. Also, are you using compression, either a sleeve or some type of wrapping? I don't agree with your therapist, a brace or taping can allow something to heal. But, hey, what the heck do I know? Except that I've recovered from nearly every injury known to runner over the last 20 years. :innocent: It just sucks waiting.

By the way, I think I may be able to get in a short run this week. You'll get there. Maybe try pool running....cool water is good and it's a good non impact exercise.

Oh, and don't even consider cortizone...If I think of anything else I'll edit again :)

LOL CyLowe ... Really trying to rest it hard. Had a Baker's cyst on my left knee where I tore the meniscus. That knee is fine. If this isn't better in 2 weeks I'm going in. :(

If you haven't already. Make sure your cleats are aligned properly. They should be so that your feet are at the same angle as when you stand or let your feet hang freely. For instance my right foot is slightly duck footed, and my left is straight, So my right cleat is adjusted to mimic the angle and my ankle almost brushes the chainstay when I pedal.

Secondly, is your foot resting comfortably in the shoe? That is, are you knock-kneed or bow-legged (Varus/Valgus). I'm slightly knock-kneed. A shim in the right shoe and a pair of specialized insoles corrected things so that my knees track up and down beautifully in a verical plane. Very slight varus/valgus can be corrected by a new insole that will adapt slightly to the shape of the foot. More pronounced can be corrected by a shim under the insole or between cleat and shoe.

I used to think that knee/tendon soreness was an inevitable part of a hard ride. The day I figured all this out and made corrections is the day my soreness vanished. And it never came back.

If, by any chance, you have Specialised BG shoes i would be very suspicious that they are contributing to your problems. Your ride with the slightly-too-high saddle probably just made the problem flare up. It was probably there all along and would have surfaced sometime.

just my opinion - but based on personal experience.

edit - should have added that the shims are wedge shaped. They're to correct the angle of the foot, not to compensate for any leg length differences.

The insoles...very good advice. Along with the rest of it. The DARE is, however, very strenuous conditions. Could be a problem just waiting to have surfaced or a one time deal. Again, the insoles can make a huge difference.
