First I got yelled at by a person that thought that she was the only person that should ave been there.
Then, I hope these two people learn a lseeon with out getting hurt. A middle aged couple, my age group, on x-mart bikes. At least they are out there, off the couch. BUT, they decide to bring the dog along, I'd say 60 lb+ dog. And they had one of those retractable leashes, about 15 feet long. I use one with my dog, but not in public, and not when I'm on my bike. I pull up behind them, I can see that the guy is having trouble controlling the dog and bike at the same time, the dog is at the end of the extended leash. So, I slow down and say "PASSING" . The guy moves to the left side of the trail, the Mrs. moves to the right side. The dog is pulling like it is in the Ididarod in the middle. Uh, HELLO, maybe both go to one side or the other, please. The guy manages reel it in, so I can pass. Hope the dog doesn't get hurt.

OK, I'm guessing 2 separate incidents here -- the yeller and the couple + dog. The guy with the dog was ALL THE WAY WRONG moving left.

If it happens again, NICELY tell the guy he needs to stay right so people can pass on the left.

You use a fifteen-foot leash, but "not in public"? Where do you use it...?

I've used one in the front yard and campground.

I use it at home, in my yard, so I don't have to stand too close when they do thier thing.
When I take them to the same MUP, I use a shorter lease, and the sit at my side when someone else passes, walking or riding.

How would grandma and grandpa know about this law?

Retractable leashes are the devil's work, I tell ya. I'm a dog lover and just can't see the point of those things. A standard 6' leash is best, especially for MUPs, walks in the woods, and sidewalks.

I rolled right over one of those leashes once with the dog owner walking on the left side of the trail and her poodle on the right side. I was astonished at the flurry of profanities spewing from that lady as I pedaled on. I didn't initially think she had it in her.

On most of the MUPs in the DC area the rules of use are posted and usually the first is "STAY RIGHT." Doesn't mean one of the signs was anywhere these riders accessed the MUP.

Thanks for sharing and venting. People can be really annoying on the roads and MUPs.

Yep, spare the choke chain, spoil the dog. If people would learn to walk their dogs, instead of having their dogs walk THEM, everyone, especially the dogs, would be a lot better off.
