Given the 50mph wind warning who's going to still bike in the Bay Area? I'm actually looking forward to doing so :D

I did a "cheat the wind" ride a couple weeks ago where I headed south with a tailwind until it died down and then rode home in the calm. When I saw the wind advisory for tomorrow my first thought was to do something similar ;)

But if it's rainy as well as windy that might dissuade me.

I need to buy fenders or at least a mud guard. I didn't plan on staying here through winter season, so everything is in SoCal. :(

I'm riding today, and was planning on riding to the pool tomorrow. I figure, I'm going to get wet anyways, why not get a ride out of the deal?

If it's raining, I will ride at least to Fair Oaks LR and then onward from Mt View LR to Stanford. If it's not raining, I will do the usual entire ride. I have a 29lb bike BEFORE the panniers/lights/toolkit/bottle/rider go on... I'm not going to blow away or anything. :)

I'll be out there commuting.

Re-installing the fenders tonight.

Just ordered these: https://www.crudusa.com/product/27
Too late for this week rain, this is what I get for procrastinating, so will need to swing by a bike shop after work to get a mud guard. Me no likey wet hoyne.

Patching the inner tubes in the pouring rain is nearly impossible. Even finding the source of the leak is difficult (especially when the tires are full of dirt, glass, sand, and other debris). I have come to hate changing tubes in the pouring rain, particularly when the wind is howling. I'll be driving tomorrow (my 3rd time driving to work since I started riding in April).

I'm going to install the fenders on the fixed gear tonight, but I'll probably drive to work rather than bike commute. I've made it my practice to pass on riding during the first big rain of the season: a) all the oil in the asphalt rises to the surface; and b) drivers lose their frickin' minds!

I feel like such a wimp ... not riding tomorrow. My excuse is I don't want to spend the time to clean it afterwards ... that's my excuse and I'm sticking with it. And yes, I do have fenders.

No riding, but I'll be out in the rain and wind trying to deliver two days of mail as the pages are blown around. Advo day, also.

Would it help if I left the recycle bin next to the mail box so you can just drop the adverts in there instead every Tuesday?

I ride in any weather and I NEVER clean my bike. Just lube the chain now and then. One chainstay is full of chain grease but then that helps protect the chainstay from rust :p

But if it's rainy as well as windy that might dissuade me.

I was riding in a wind storm once and could barely go faster than 8mph because of headwind. One lady poked her head out of a truck and called me a lunatic :notamused:

I don't know if i'm going to commute on my bike tomorrow like some have mentioned in this thread. I don't have fenders for the commuter yet (ordered some today). If it's super rainy i will ride my motorcycle since I actually have fenders on that plus a rain suit if needed ;)

I was gonna go out in the wind just to play after work.

NO, that would constitute a federal crime on my part.

I'm betting that I will see someone riding to Shaw's, though.

It's a random south/southeast wind. That's going to be one hell of a fast ride home if it keeps up.

No car here, I'm biking. Pulling out my rain pants and shoe covers tonight.

Never mind, I choose life. I rode in Santa Ana winds, but it was bright and sunny. Strong winds + rain + dark = I am on a trainer. I hope downstairs neighbors weren't complain. :innocent:

If anybody is riding today, make sure that you've a lot of bright light on you. It was even difficult seeing other car taillights in this pouring rain. Also many of the streets are flooded with water, particular to the right of roads.

I was greeted by a gust of wind + rain this morning as I checked to see what the rain was like at 5 am this morning. I said hello and drove in to work.

I biked into work. The wind wasn't as hard as I expected but there were some big gusts. I've definitely faced worse winds. All in all a nice pleasant and wet ride :)

Right now I'm totally dry and toasty warm. Everyone else at work are rather grumpy haha. A few coworkers had close shaves while driving on the freeway.

The whippets and I made it about 10 feet outside the door (with raincoats on) this morning before they decided to turn back, soaking wet.

They're recovering in front of the fire now.

I rode to work today as I always do.
I caught a wheel in an uneven surface I've been over a zillion times. It was just really slick I guess.

Smacked it in. OUCH.

Bit o' blood, but no bike damage. Hit me head pretty well.

Ordered a new helmet already.

This is my first rainy season without a car and I elected to take the motorcycle today. It's only 2 miles to work so I skipped the rain suit. My normal textile riding jacket was soaked all the way through by the time I got to the office. The wind was impressive :)

Same here, except none of my coworkers are in yet. I decided to forgo the expressway this morning. And I need some anti-fog stuff for my glasses. Otherwise it was fine.

By the way, I did what I said and took light rail part of the way and then rode it in from downtown MTV. Bit of an adventure on 26x1.25" slicks. Saw one accident at Serra and El Camino.

Well after hour and half on a trainer watching CNN, I rode to work on my motorcycle. That was fun. I had enough sense to use my leather pants, and bring a spare jeans with me. I had a super flash blinker on my messenger bag on. :roflmao2:

Damn, riding on the rain on the moto freaks me out more than the bicycle. Think I'll go for my Tuesday night ride regardless of the weather. Not much else to do while my daughter is in dance class. Got the lights charged and fender/rain gear ready!

Glad you are ok. Nasty weather today. First rain always means very slick roads.

Time for a bent, may be? or a tricycle? :innocent:

Just got back from a quick 30" ride. That was fun. Windy and wet, but fun and not cold. And I was approached by the other guy up there (top of a local hill); he was a reporter from the SF Chronicle. He interviewed me, saying he was doing a story on the storm. He said nobody was on top of the hill, and was surprised to see a bicyclist. I told him I look forward to the ride. He asked whether I saw any other cyclists today; I said no, but I would not be surprised at all to see any.

It was pretty windy. I had to take it easy for the whole ride in case I got hit by a gust of wind.

Edit: Ooops, just saw this post:

So, it appears to be an on-campus, one-way street. Still....

Nope, I didn't endo, just had the tire swept out from under me. I caught a lip of concrete running parallel to my path. No slo mo, just smack all at once.
I don't think I'll be getting a 'bent, even if it gets me lower to the ground, George.
But I sure do feel a bit older today.

Thanks for the kind thoughts, all.
