Here are some that were designed by David Byrne (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Byrne), all located in New York City. Does anybody have other example of cool bike racks--either artistic (like these) or practical?

Not artistic, but I like this rack in Tiburon since it just looks like a normal fence railing. But it's very functional with the variable rail spacing and the little dip in the pavement that holds the wheel in place.

Here's the winner of the bike rack competition in NYC, and a couple other cool racks I found:

On the MoMa (not sure what that is) I can see somebody putting the lock around the narrow part by the top so that it doesn't go through the rack, just around it. They look really good, though.

Unintentional signal there:

the LA times, and other print newspapers, are being supplanted by new technology, just like the penny farthing was.

What about a spiral? Apparently commerically available.

I like how in the first photo of the dog bike rack it's empty but the traditional bike rack behind it is full. All though these bike racks look cool they don't seem too functional. I still think the simple upside down U rack is the best and least obtrusive styles of bike racks.

I imagine they waited for the rack to be empty before they took a picture of it.

BTW, coincidentally, one of the best discussions of form and function in design is in David Byrne's book, Bicycle Diaries (http://www.davidbyrne.com/art/books/bicycle_diaries/). Read it...it coule literally change the way that you look at the world.
