any tips on building core body strength, i was doing the basics, when it came to push ups, i would always injure myself, turns out i have chronic bursitis in my elbow, so i guess weight lifting is out, also used elastic bands but not sure if that would help or hurt in the long run, any advice is appreciated

If you want core strength, you've got to work on your core, not your arms. Do things like abdominal work - situps, crunches, etc. You can find websites with all sorts of different exercises to work on different areas of your abs. And back work would be the other side of things.

google 'around the world core workout' It's a plan developed by a triathlete. The exercises are fairly advanced. When I started, I did the odd numbered exercises one night, the even the next at 10-15 reps per exercise. I added exercises and reps as I strengthened.

I think of core strength as the glutes, lower back and abs. Pushups are a common core exercise, but mostly because you have to hold your abs, back etc. correct to do them right. If you can't do pushups, there is always the plank exercise. When you can do a plank for 2 or 3 minutes without shaking, your core will be coming along just fine. There's also side planks on that exercise plan, those are fun.
