I’ve never really understood how the worlds and the Olympics differ in any major way. This article (http://www.cyclingnews.com/tech.php?id=tech/2004/news/feb18) sort of defines what the differences used to be (that the Olympics were restricted to the younger riders who may not have had a great chance at a worlds title). If in both events riders are riding for their respective countries, doesn’t that become a little redundant during years the summer games to have the worlds a little more than a month after the Olympics?
Well, I guess it gives riders two chances at glory in a single year.
Olympics used to be strictly amateur, Worlds were also divided along amateur/pro lines.
