Road Cycling - I'll be straight forward on this one

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

A 2001 Schwinn Peloton, originally $2300, going for a final price of $1000. Reynolds 853 steel, Ultegra/105 components, Ritchey wheelset, double chainring, cycle computer w/ cadence measuring. etc.

Is this worth it if I cycle maybe twice a week on the road plus maybe taking it for a commute? Right now, I don't have a road bike that fits me, but I have a 1990 pugeot in fairly rough shape. Thanks

Is it new old stock or used? What condition is it in? For a grand, you can get a nice bike and based on your stated riding habits, I'd say it's worth it to buy a new/er bike.

The Peloton is really nothing spectacular... its kind of a heavy frame, even for 853. We had one hanging on the wall in our shop in Tx for some reason, and I was always curious about it. Quality seems ok, but I think built as you describe it would probably be a 20+lbs bike.

I would be floored to see a $2300 bike with 105/Ultegra... that sounds rediculous. At that price, at a bare minimum I would expecut FULL Ultegra maybe with some Dura-Ace thrown in. We sold a Schwinn Fastback @ 17.9lbs w/ FULL Ultegra, FSA Carbon Cranks, Carbon post, nice wheelset, for $1699 retail (if I remember correctly) in any case, it was well under $2g.

This is coming from a guy that has a 22lbs 1989 Tange Prestige Paramount, however :D

The only thing that attracts me about that bike is the propect of getting more money back if I sell it than let's say a trek 1000 - maybe close to what I paid for it. Is that possible?
(by the way, it's in excellent shape)

You're thinking of getting a Trek 1000?? And you have 1K to play with?? You can do better than that.

I sold my wife's Peloton w/full Ultegra & Helium wheelset for $520 (USD) a few months back. I had it on the market for several months (Ebay, rec.bicycles.marketplace) and didn't get any bites at a higher price point. Not sure exactly how I sold it in the end... but the buyer was thrilled with it.

It was in excellent condition mechanically and cosmetically but, hey, it's not a new bike and while a hot ticket when new, technology changes. In fact, older bikes can often times be worth more if sold as individual parts vs a complete bike which is why you'll find several folks who buy complete bikes who then strip them and sell off the frame, wheels, and components individually.
