Ceremony is Oct. 21

A ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the new trail along Newport Way Northwest will be held from 2-3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21. Everyone is invited to join Issaquah Mayor Ava Frisinger in being the first group to use the new trail.

The event will be held on the north side of Newport Way Northwest at Northwest Oakcrest Drive. The new trail includes a 12-foot wide paved area with 2-foot gravel shoulders along the north side of Newport Way Northwest and a 3-foot shoulder along the south side of the street. I've watched this being built for most of the past year, as Newport Way is part of my standard bike commute. Newport runs generally east-west between Bellevue and Issaquah, and is a popular cycling route. I'm glad to see the widened shoulders and improvements in lighting for pedestrians, but if they've built that wide shoulder/path to force eastbound cyclists onto it as well, no thanks. I'll continue to ride with traffic, not against it.
