Road Cycling - Seat's just to darn SKINNY!!!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

As I wrote in the Mechanics forum, I pulled my Centurion Ironman off the garage wall after soaking up plenty of dirt and a little corrosion over the past 9 years. I am basically doing a full restoration of it, and bring it up to snuff with some new components that are better suited for modern day.
My main problem is the seat. Virtually every Mens seat is too skinny for me. They really hurt like hell. After searching every LBS in the area, I was so frustrated, I was almost ready to give up. But, I found a really thick gel seat made by Schwinn at Walmart, (go figure). I have been using it for my mountain bike. It is a mens seat, but is a bit wider with a nice center channel, and very comfortable. The good thing is, it is wider than a regular road bike seat, but not real wide like a womens seat.
When I went back to the LBS, the guy there laughed and said, "You don't want to use one of those on a road bike. They are really for cheap mountain bikes, and touring bikes." "Use one of these!" He handed me a seat that had some extra padding on it, but was still way too skinny and was hurting the inside of my hip/ball joints of my pelvic bone. I didn't feel like I was sitting on it. Instead, it felt like it was trying to tear me in half. It also cost about $80.00. The one at Walmart was $15.00.
Question is, is the cheaper seat ok to use for a road bike? It kinda makes it look out of proportion, but I figure if it works, then what's the big deal? It looks nice, but not the most aerodynamic, nor does it look very race worthy though.
Unless you guys know specifically of a seat that is really better for guys when they just need a little wider seat that has plenty of cushion, I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

Actually, I should mention that the seat I got for my mountain bike is about 1.5" wider in the back, and 0.5" thicker padding on top than the original seat that came with my road bike.

clearly the expensive seat is not suited to your phsyique.
So try the wider one.
How much do you weigh?
also remember that thick padding does notmean the seat will be comfortable.
Look for a wider seat with less padding, a flexible carbon plastic shell ( not carbon fibre).
Something like a Selle Italia
iv just got a new roadster, saracen ventoux - the seat is a selle italia and im having to take days off riding to recover from pains due to the saddle!
I'm actually looking for a comfier seat, i had a marin hawk hill and the seat was a wilderness trail or something like that, i know on a road bike it'd be daft as its a MTB saddle but that saddle is fairly slim and comfortable as hell - also would go fairly well with a roadster.
My advice is use the saddle that is comfier now to avoid missing out any rides, even if you get mocked because of it and try and find a more adapted saddle to your road bike for the long term.
All i can say is that im going to buy my old MTB saddle again to use for a few weeks before i can find a good comfy replacement saddle.
Btw the pains you are getting are in the same place i get them with my road bike saddle, so if you do look into getting the marin hawk hill saddle you'd be set for a few weeks.

I'm still breaking in my new Specialized Telluride(?) leather body geometry saddle. I had to get a new one after I took a spill last weekend and broke my '03 body geometry "comfort" saddle. I can tell you that the old one was more comfortable and I was used to it...but I'm giving this one time and am going to stick w/ it for now...it should be better in the long run.
Ideally you don't want a super cushiony, wide & soft seat...you want one that is fairly firm and supports just your sit bones. If you are using lycra bike shorts then it's actually less irritating in the long run as you don't drag over the seat but glide as you move.
I agree though that initially it feels like the softer wider seats are more comfortable...I guess it's all what you get used to and how you ride. I'm looking for one that I can spend all day on and not feel sore during riding.

I did find one that has the same dimensions as far as width goes, but is not as thick. It has a thinner layer of gel on top, but appears to be wide enough. And it has a smooth surface, not cloth/lycra. I haven't tried it yet, but I think I will give it a shot to see how it compares to the one I have on my mountain bike.
I'll tell you guys this. I must have sat on 20 differant seats at three differant shops and couldn't find one that I could sit on for more than just a few minutes before it drove me nuts. Or should I say, "A pain in the @$$."

Brooks, B17. Nice and wide, heavy and if it works for you
should be the last saddle you'll ever need (they last that long).
They are not cheap, but it is worth it.
Check out Wallingford Bikes, Bill Laine has a 6 month money back
guarantee. If you don't like the saddle return it.
He is great to talk to and KNOWS what he is talking about.

Thanks, will check all those out. BTW, I am about 6'3", regular build, and weigh about 200#. I am pretty average I think. But, just can't seem to find a seat that will work. But, now I have a few more choices, thanks.

I got my Brooks B66 (http://permaco.com/cgi-local/SoftCart.exe/online-store/scstore/trekkingtouring.html?L+scstore+xltx0595ff5da25d+1099802578) from Persons-Magestic (http://www.permaco.com)for just $58 and I love it. My LBS wanted $85 for it. With shipping and proofhide it came out to under $75. The best part was it was on my doorstep in under 36 hours. Nothing but rave reviews from me for permaco.
Koobi. The AU Enduro requires no break-in ... at least for me it didn't.
Let me vouch for the Koobi AU Enduro as well...

Maybe find the older style road seat. They used to be bigger, padded.
I have a Velo Plush I use on my mtb when jumping. I use a 'skinny' when road commuting.
The little x-tra padding and width are right as I have narrow hips. A real mtb seat used for DH is like sitting on a chair to me.
I have like 7 saddles, only use 2.
Buy ones from thrift stores and try 'em out till you find the correct shape-then order as close a match as they make new.
