Apologies in advance if the answer exists. I searched and didn't find this exact subject.

I have semi aero hard anodized rims, late 80's I think. Dia Compe brakes and pads. I just got the bike so I don't know the history of any of the components. It's the front brakes that squeak.
I tried:
sanding the pads
rubbing alcohol on the rims
toeing in the pads
Is there something else to do because of the anodized rims?

how old are the pads?
Are these center pulls or are they side pull calipers?
forget about the type of rim, its about the brakes..

I like Kool Stop Eagle-Claw 2 pads, black or salmon.

Try softer pads...like Bell (@Wal*Mart) or Jagwire Basics (Grey pads seem to be better).

Brake pads designed for carbon fiber rims will also work.

No, it is about the rim too. On my cross bike I have one wheelset with nicely machined sidewalls, and the braking is strong and squeak free, without fork shudder. With my other wheels which are hard anodized (same width) I get squeaking even with more toe in and clean rims. Plus they cause fork shudder. All with the same brake setup.

I would like to know if there is an answer to this. I have tried switching to new pads and that didn't help, although they weren't Kool-Stop quality.

If all the above fail, check to see that the brakes are mounted firmly. If they are center pull cantilevers, be sure there is no play where the lever mounts to the post in the frame. A small amount of play will allow the brake pad to skip or chatter. At high speed, this turns into squeal. On an old frame wear may be the cause. Not sure about how to fix if it's the posts.

I have had my hard anodized rims for 30+ years. I can guarantee it isn't about the rims, if the brakes are adjusted properly and the toe in is correct then they won't squeal.

The brakes are side pull RGC, see picture. As stated I don't know the history of the pads. They look like they have plenty of wear left but they could be 20 years old for all I know. They stop the bike really well for sure but the squeal is loud.
