I have raced road races and crits in the past, but all of the crits I have done have been a set amount of laps. This weekend I am racing a timed crit (30 mins. + 3 laps or something) and am just wondering what to expect. I have some guesses, but just looking for a little advice. Thanks!

It's basically the same thing.

What they do is say that you are going to race for 30 minutes and estimate the number of laps. Then when the race starts they count the number of laps you do in 15 minutes (half the time) and then assume there will be that many laps to go and usually post the lap count at the start/finish line.

G'day,

In Oz I've never heard of a crit with a set amount of laps?....all of ours are a nominated time + a stated number of laps. For instance, 1 hour + 3 laps. You need to keep track of the time yourself, so you have some idea where you are in the race. Set your cycling computer to 'stop watch'....you need to know this rather than ,say, speed, which is irrelevant in a crit. At the end of the hour (usually 'or thereabouts') the organisers will hold a a sign which says '3' (or however many laps they told you at the start), as you cross the finish line. They will usually then show you a '2' next time & the ring a 'bell' for the last lap. First over the finish line after the 'bell' wins!......You'll enjoy this...let us know how you go,

cheers,

Hitchy
