Obviously Dallas has solved all of their other crime issues, now they can concentrate on important things.

Enforcement was real sporadic before, and I suppose mainly enforced in the White Rock Lake area, as far as I could tell.

I rode on the Katy trail one time, and forgot my helmet, and of course, was looking to see who else had them. I met three bicycle policemen and they didn't say anything, and I don't think any of the other riders I saw that day had helmets. Most of the recreational riders out at White Rock Lake have helmets, most of the hobo/ninja riders in the rest of town don't.

What a bunch of BS.

""Bicycle accidents occur all the time and hospitals are filled with patients from those injuries who were not wearing helmets."

Right. I would like to know, at this moment, how many patients there are in Dallas hospitals with head injuries from a bicycle accident. They must be lined up in the hallways along with the motorcyclist with head injuries who were LEGALLY NOT WEARING HELMETS!

I do encourage people to wear helmets and do so myself almost all the time. However, I had pedaled tens of thousands of miles injury free before I bought a helmet. I respect the rights of those who choose not to wear one.

+1

Yea, the image of helmetless cyclists overflowing the hospitals is funny.

I always wear a helmet cuz I'm an anarchist. Should be common sense, and should NOT be some law....like the seat belt thing. People are unable to be responsible for their own actions?!?!?!? Or is that just Americans?

I wear my helmet every time I ride. I used to not wear one on the vintage group ride on Sunday, but I now wear it then too.
I don't see what the problem of wearing a helmet causes, that it would be so hated that it's legally required?,,,,BD

I always wear a helmet on my bike and I always wear a seatbelt in my car. However, I don't think it should be illegal to go without. I'd probably have less problem with the law if it were passed and enforced in a consistent manner.

It is common knowledge this law was passed to give the police a reason to stop and search riders they believe to be transporting drugs. Every weekend, there are hundreds of riders at White Rock Lake and many of them do not have on helmets. How many are ticketed? I've never seen anyone stopped there. Go to a less prosperous part of town and I'd be willing to bet the number of riders being stopped is still low but logarithmically higher than around the lake.

So the city didn't pass the law for the safety of our riders.
