Bicycle Mechanics - Quick release skewer help needed, please.

I have a quick release “Specialized STOUT” hub and I can not remove the skewer. It just rotates in the axle. The quick release lever opens and closes, and the axle nut on the other side unscrews.. I can’t get the wheel off of the fork because of the recessed drop-out safety feature. How can I remove this skewer preferably without damaging it or the axle and Hub?

Unless the skewer nut is stripped it should simply back off if you turn it while holding the skewer from rotating.

The drawback of the type of safety is that it means you have to back off the nut to remove the wheel, then re-adjust the QR tension each time you replace the wheel, which kinda takes some of the quick out of the quick release. IMO I think this is less safe than a standard non-safety fork tip where once the QR tension is properly set, the nut is left alone (usually retained by a nylock or other friction device) and the wheel is removed/installed simply by a flip of the lever always locking securely to the same pre-set tension.

Once you're confident in the use of your QR you might file off the raised "safety" lips, and use rubber cement to make the nut stickier so it stays in place keeping the QR tension consistent.

Thanks FBinNY, The skewer nut unscrews without a problem. After it is removed the skewer can not be removed.from the axle. It will rotate but can not be pulled away from the axle to clear the dropout.

The skewer is probably bent and stuck in the axle. Screw on the skewer-nut about halfway and tap it with a hammer.

Some of those skewer nuts are plastic. First, try to find a metal nut and screw it on until flush with the tip of the skewer. Then encourage with hammer. If you can't find one, try using the original "nut" backwards, then be sure to hit it flush.

The LBS punched it out.
