Road Cycling - Why arent time trial bikes used in other races?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

i know they are more aero dynamic, isnt it the more the better? SO why arent all road bikes designed like that. What are the drawbacks of TT bikes?

UCI rules for one, secondly they are not as comfortable as regular road bikes, and thirdly, mass start events + aero bars = crashes.

I'm no expert, but.........
TT bikes don't handle as well, and feel a little sluggish off the mark compared to "normal" bikes because:
TT bikes are often heavier
TT bikes often have a longer wheel-base
Disk wheels and deep dish wheels don't cope very well with cross-winds, and they are often heavy
The weight of TT bikes means they would NEVER be used for going up mountains

On that note, not a single rider used a TT bike on the L’Alpe d’Huez even though it was a time trial. Given a flat course they are rockets, but I'd hate to take one up a hill like that.

3-6lbs is a lot of weight to carry up a mountain such as L’Alpe d’Huez.

Weight isn't really the issue. The frames and wheels of TT bikes are very stiff to maximize efficiency, but it makes them uncomfortable and twitchy. Aero bars limit control and make it harder to breathe. Disc wheels are susceptible to cross-winds, which is why no one rides with a font disc anymore. TT bikes are about speed at all cost. Road bikes are about comfort and control (relatively speaking).
