Be VERY careful when ordering from ProBikeKit - their US Dollars conversion are wayyyyyy off. After ordering a big ticket item from them several months ago, and then suffering an over-the-credit-limit fee on my credit card after my purchase price was over $100 more than it was supposed to be, I did some research and found that their currency conversion rates are wrong in MULTIPLE places. Today, I just checked their website as I got an email advertising a good rate on Michelin Pro3 Races ($71 for a pair) and checked to see if they had corrected their US dollars pricing conversions.

Nope. Not even close. By my calculations, the pair of tires would be $83.43 instead of $71.22. That's quite a difference! 17% to be exact! The current exchance rate as of 10-15-09 is 1.6274. Clicking on the "Currency" link on their website, they list 1.59714. While this rate is accurate from a few days ago, the rate when I had ordered hadn't been seen in several previous weeks! Even the rate that they have listed in their "Currency" link is incorrect based on the prices they give. At 1.5971 dollars to pounds and a base price of 51.28 GBP, it should cost $81.89. A price of $71.22 means that they are using an exchange rate of 1.3888, something that hasn't been seen since the January to March time period!

Recommendation: They still have pretty decent prices. I would browse their website in Great Britain Pounds, and then do a manual calculation to US Dollars based on the current exchange rate (easily found on the home page of Yahoo Finance). Also be aware that most credit card companies charge around a 3% fee for currency conversions.

Customer service: I sent them an email through their website (no email address given) and didn't hear back for about a week. There was no check box to send a confirmation to yourself so there was no record of them ever receiving it. I probably spent half an hour typing up the email as I had to get different exchange rates and explain my whole story about pricing, my credit card over the limit and whatnot. After not hearing back, I sent them another email (wasting another half hour or more composing it) to which they finally responded. The did honor the price that I thought I was paying for it (as listed in the US Dollars version of their website) but I still lost several hours of my time trying to straighten everything out (I was able to get my money back from my over the limit fee from my credit card company as well). I'd give them a neutral here due to balancing the length of time before my issue was resolved to the fact that they refunded me money to what I thought I was paying. Make sure to copy any email you send them into a text document in case you need to send it again.

Hmmm...interesting. At least for their new 2 pack deal on Michelin PR3s, their price is about 17% off when you use the base price in GBP (which is what they charge to your credit card - the credit card company does the exchange rate conversion based on current rates) and multiply it by the current exchange rate. Their listed exchange rate is several days old (dollars has fallen several percent since then), and whatever they used to come up with the US Dollars rate for the 2 pack is ridiculous - it goes back to rates back at the beginning of the year!

This is from another thread.

I added the Michelin 2-pack to my cart, and at checkout it said I would be charged 44.59 GBP. 44.59 X 1.59714 (today's exchange rate on PBK) = $71.22

Where are you getting 51.28 GBP? This is an on-sale item, so we're not paying "base price".

Coming from my previous bad experience with PBK, I always check the GBP price and just do a manual calculation based on the current exchange rate as listed by Yahoo Finance. Going through the GBP website, it states that the price for that item is 51.28 GBP. However, I just went through the checkout process through the US Dollars priced site and confirmed that they do show up as 44.59 GBP to be charged to your credit card.

Still, I would be wary of the exchange rate listed on PBK. I can't find a closing rate of 1.5971 anywhere although the rates have been close to that this entire week. I found a history of closing prices here:
http://www.x-rates.com/d/USD/GBP/data120.html
Do they sample at some random point during the day? How old is the info? When I made my purchase several months ago, the rate that they used was off quite a bit and certainly older than the previous day. It was something like 1.56 or 1.57 when in reality it was around 1.63. I believe they didn't even use their stated exchange rate for the conversion either when you compared the item on their British Pounds website to their US Dollars website. However, after seeing the price discrepancy on these Michelin Pro3 Race twin packs, perhaps they do have different prices depending on where you are buying.

Anyways, just be aware of the exchange rate - from what I remember when trying to sort things out with my credit card, they use the closing exchange rate - I'm not sure if it's from the previous day or the end of the current day (whenever it stops trading). Also, you will most likely be charged a transaction fee of several percent from the credit card as it needs to convert the GBP to USD. With the market being quite volatile with (relatively) big swings in exchange rates, it might be good to check with your credit card company to see what data they use. Better safe than sorry, especially if you plan on ordering a big ticket item from PBK.com where a few percentage points of difference could be a quite substantial difference in absolute dollars.

Thanks for the update about your experience Phantoj - I actually think I might pick up some PR3s now. $74 shipped (with my 3% CC fee, YMMV) is pretty much unbeatable!

I ordered these: http://www.probikekit.com/display.php?code=y0061

I paid about $64. How? Well, I was charged correctly. (I ordered a couple of other things, too.) I also applied a 10% discount code from a previous email. That went through, too. I just checked my CC; it all looks good.

$46 from eBay is a great deal, if you don't mind ivory. Oh, with this PBK deal, it's not really clear what color you're getting. The picture is black, but I didn't see this explicitly stated anywhere.
