Road Cycling - "Posey" web sites really P*** me off

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Check out this "show-offy", posey crap:
http://www.wilier.it/
http://www.scapin.com/
All that fancy crap takes ages to load, and is a pain is the a$$ find your way around:mad:
I waited ages for the Scapin site get going, and that's what we get?!?!?
I really wanted to check out the Wiliers, but I got fed up with all that rubbish, and switched off.
I just want plenty of info, and some half decent photos -- none of that "la di da", zoomy, wanky bull.
And what's with the poofy bloody music?!?!
If the Columbus site comes back with a similar bollock-fest, I'll....I'll.....I'll....blow a bubble  :D

Agreed Flash for the sake of Flash. I hate flash it belongs in video not on the web. It's also the worst way to try and sell something. 'I have an Idea lets pay a but load of money to a flash artest so he can beef up his portfolio and eliminate a good 50% of our customers on dial up who cant stand to wait 4 hours to buy some socks.'
It's pretty fast here on my T1 though :)

*Warning* mute your sound before following the link. That site is an excellent example of how NOT to use Flash. Now I have a headache from that loud scroll over beeping noise and the elevator music.
Holy cr@p. What a waste.
And I hate when a site opens a window full screen they scapin's does. Especially when I'm at work and my whole screen is filled with bike stuff. Just hope the boss doesn't walk by.

As a web guy, I lay it all on the table for clients regarding the overuse of Flash. Sometimes that's just what they want. It's about image - they want to be the biggest and brightest of their competitors, utilizing the newest web technology blah blah blah.
Sometimes you just do what you can to make the client happy - even if they're an idiot.
I've seen far worse overusage examples than those links posted, but an alternate version of the site in html would probably be nice for dial-up visitors, and less likely to alienate visitors.
what the hell was up with that damn willier site? they have the f'n bikes zippin by so fast that ya can't even take time to look at what you might be interested in. youu have to just blindy click on one because it's a place to start.... morons.

I was wondering what you fellows were talking about. I went to the Wilier site and got pretty much blank page. Alas, I am a Linux user who does not have the Flash plugin installed. Flash could be useful, but it is too often abused to justify its installation on my computers. So I just shrug empty pages like this off and move on. That's the beauty of the web; there's also someone else out there with something similar.
As for giving the client what they want, I would say it is in everybody's best interest for the designer to guide these fools toward a good decision. But yeah, there's enough people doing web design that inevitably you will stumble across stuff like this.
Solution: contact Wilier (or whoever) and tell them what you think. They will listen, sometimes to a fault. I have lost count over the years the number of times I've had to "fix" something that isn't broken or wrong, because somebody came across my web pages that didn't like it (and I didn't have the final say as I should have).

Sometimes the client wants what they want, and you can't persuade them otherwise. The end-user doesn't pay the designer. I'd rather meet the client's requirements and get paid rather than see them hire someone else. My advice is on the table - if they choose to ignore it that's their decision.
The only real fault of the designer I notice is a lack of an html alternative to the Flash. I've never had a client turn that down, and if the workflow is set up properly when constructing the site, it doesn't take more than a couple hours to create an html alternative to the Flash for a static site, which doesn't translate to a whole lot of cash compared to the overall site budget. I describe it as "a minimal cost to avoid alienating a maximum number of (dial-up) users, while still maintaining the technological and creative cutting edge." Blah blah tech-net-jargon.

Hmm - it seems to work fine for me - but it's possible that's the difference between Mac Flash plug-in and others...I know sometimes things don't always work the way they should cross-platform in Flash. I did notice that the framerate is set incredibly low, so none of the animation was as fluid as it should have been...decent design, bad use of the technology I guess.
