Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Cheapest fixed gear wheelset, Nishiki sport

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm looking at buying a Nishiki Sport from a local Pawn shop, they've got $95 on it but I'm going to offer ~$50. I want to convert something to a fixie just to try it out for commuting (~37 mi one way) and training.
What would be my best option for cheap, decent fixie conversion? I'm thinking a flip/flop hub might be best for me, but I don't want to dump a ton of cash into this experiment!
Bicycle wheel warehouse has some pretty respectable wheelsets in the $150 range. Might be your best bet if you want to go new.
Otherwise, ebay or craigslist depending on your area.

I've been checking ebay seems like ~$100 for a wheelset. Craigslist is crap in my area... Mississippi, but it is growing.
Yeah CL can be amazing if you're in the right area for it, but it's hit or miss if you're not in a major metro.
Might checking them for neighboring areas, if you really want to stay on the cheap. Driving isn't free but it's better than overpaying on eBay.
Another option is BikeIsland:

...which has a few more options in the $100 range. You're gonna have a hard time going lower without scouring used listings.

You can get Weinmann DP18's for around $160
37 mile commute? one way?!? I'd take my long-distance bike if I was doing over a Metric Century everyday!
for that, I definitely wouldn't go cheap...and I'd probably want gears.

Very easily removed, however, you'll have a bunch of gunk leftover, I didn't have a hairdryer so I had to take some goo gone to them. But still shouldn't take more than 10-15 minutes. Also, they are a little heavy, but for the price, they are pretty strong wheels and look pretty clean. I love the medium V, not too shallow so you don't have to worry about strength, but not rediculously deep.

What do you mean medium V? They're all about the same. The Vuelta Track Comp is 28mm profile vs. Velocity Deep-V's 30mm profile vs. Weinmann DP18's 31mm profile.

I've done it once on my '87 Trek eLance 400. I'll only usually have time to do it tues/thurs due to class schedules but it's really not that bad of a ride.
thanks for the input!

They aren't 28mm, they are 20mm, hence, a medium v. I actually think they even used the term medium v when I bought mine.

BikeIsland told me it was 28mm so...
