Is there any way for a standard user to tell if a private message has been read or not?

I was making arrangements with another member to sell a bike to them, but they have gone quiet on me. It could simply be that he is just busy (this guy is in the armed forces), but I'd like to know if he's read the messages or not.

Look at his profile and see when he last logged in.

there's also an option (for next time i guess) to have a read receipt....
