Cyclocross - Gutting a Tiagra STI Lever

I'm running a single chainring setup, right STI shifter and an aero brake lever on the left. The STI levers have an angle to them for easier reach and the aero brake doesn't. I have a left (broken shifting)Tiagra STI lever that I would like to gut and just use for braking. I've taken a few nuts and washers off but I've run into a deadend. There seems to be a long bolt running through the mechanism, I have nut off but the bolt won't budge. Can someone help me?

You could just leave it and run it that way. I'm running a Rival brifter like that right now. I'm not sure about how to gut it out though.

Shimano has some really nice diagrams that show you how the shifter was assembled.

Nah mine works fine, I was referring to the Tiagra shifter. I plan on keeping mine as is because I'm sure I'll use it with a FD again.

i know guys that gut their sram shifter & put it back together later. no problemo.

roy500x2, thanks but I've already looked at the diagram. The one thing I didn't do was undo the lever so that I can access the phillips head at the back of the shifting mech. Whether that takes it apart or not...?
Yes, the shifting mech was broken, I bought it that way on purpose to gut it for the brake only conversion.

What's the model number? I'll take a look at the diagram and I'll see if I can recommend anything. Pics of the lever in question and what you've done to is so far would be useful as well.

EDIT: Now that I'm taking a closer look at the diagrams, they don't seem to show you how to fully disassemble them. It looks like it shows you how to take off the front part of the shifter, which holds all the parts for working the derailleur. I don't know how much help I can offer unless I can find myself a similar shifter that can be stripped, since the diagrams aren't enough for me.

sopposedly gutting the mech doesnt even void the warranty? thinking about trying this one day. but sram also sopposedly just released drop road brake levers identical to their brifters.

That would be awesome if that's true.

Well, I finally gutted it! The next problem is making a spacer to take the place of all the shifter guts and getting it to stay rigid. Then replace the lever and lever spring. I'm not a machinist so it'll be a bit crude but I have some ideas...
