I know the hubub method works with campy ergo 10 with shimano 9speed cassette/derailleur. Does that mean I could do the same with an Ergo 9speed with a shimano 8speed cassette/derailleur?

Actually, it's even more simple. A Campy 10 shifter has an average cable pull of 2.83mm by my measurements. I have table that someone made, claiming that the average cable pull for a Shimano 8 shifter is 2.8mm. That would mean that the normal cable routing with a 10 speed Campy shifter should operate an 8 speed Shimano drivetrain.
In reality, none of the cable pulls are 2.8mm. Campy shifters pull 2.5mm five times, 3mm twice and 3.5mm twice.
Campy 9 shifters are made in two versions, the older has an average pull of 3.2mm and the newer one has a pull of 3.0mm. The newer version was not made long, since it's production started after 10 speed came out in 2000. Campy made a change to the RD actuation ratio in 2001, so 9 and 10 were the same (IIRC). The newer RDs do not have a B screw in the normal location, it's hidden under the main pivot.

I can only assume that the 2.8mm cable pull for Shimano 8 would not be the oddball DA model.
Campy 9 shifters pull either 3.2mm or 3.0mm, not the 2.8mm needed by Shimano 8. The hubbub routing might help since the idea is to increase the lever arm length of the RD and make it work with more pull than it was designed to use.

Probably not. You need to look at the cassette section of Sheldon brown site and look at the pitch of the various cassettes. I am running a 10spd ergo with a Shimano 9 spd cassette and a 9 spd chain. It works very well.
