I hope this link works. I am thinking of buying the lock that is displayed first on the page. I curently have
a cable lock. Some dude told me it would be easy to clip with some bolt cutters so now I am all paranoid.

Let me second Merton: www.onguardlock.com, which is also available from REI and Nashbar.

Kryptonite or the Master Lock Street Cuffs are the only way to fly. I could sneeze and break that $8.00 piece of crap.
edit Please realize that this post is PRE BiC pen problem Kryptonite.
Edit: 3-23-05 Street Cuffs suck! Endorsement rescinded

Actually, it "sucks". No real locks from REI. Unless you live in the woods. Lets say GET A LOCK if you live amongst theives. $8.00 lock ok someplaces sure! Many places, not here! 60 dollars gets you started.

Lost my last key, no $60 to spend. Went to hardware store and got 3 feet of the thickest hardened steel link chain they had- 6mm? The BIGGEST padlock and cut an inner tube to slide over the chain as a paint protector.

$15.00....You need cutters with 4 foot arms to chop. Kinda hard to hide under a coat.
Also it weighs 10 lbs, and a bad a$$ car thumper.

Oh, lock your rear wheel also to the frame or station. A new fronts easy to replace, a rear wheel with the cogset sucks, way harder to just swap, and way more expensive to replace.

Keep on smartin'

Even worse!, Onguard locks are lousy. Miguel at Pro shop tried to sell me. I chose Kyrptonite mini evo 2000 instead, more money, less keys, etc. Some friends opted for the onguard. They did not like the onguard lock. It is a very bad choice IMO.

Got data to back this up?

bike chain. The square or hexagonal/octagonal designs. Bad part is they are really heavy, good part is it's about as tough as you'll find.

what's wrong with onguar brand locks? why did they hate them?

also. if you got the dough abus is probably the best.

i just recomended on guard because they are cheap and hard to cut from what i read. and kryptonites locks aren't that good.. the fagedaboudit has a plastic core! (i took mine apart)

Sorry, I was a little over-lubricated last night and made some bad comments on this board. I'm deleting them now.

Seanholio, nothing to back up these statements, please ignore. The only complaints from the 2 people I asked (hardly a statistically significant sampling) were about ease of use (important to us messengers). No one's bike was stolen. It's been years since I heard of a u-lock being busted in DC. It used to happen but the thiefs moved on to easier targets or more lucrative booty, I guess.

I'm not going to trust a 8 dollar lock myself. There are methods to break a u-lock, I feel that the Krypto mini evo lock is designed to foil these known methods. Its not perfect, with the right tools a thief can break it in seconds.

Merton, Some of the on-guard locks might be more secure than kryptonites. Performance has the Onguard Beast for example with hexagonal links and drill resistant padlock. On sale for $59.99. They also make some less expensive u-locks that come with cable to secure wheels. Probably, cheap ($8) u-lock is fine anywhere as long as you do not leave it there locked for more than ten minutes. I see some nice rides on the sidewalk all day, every day. In a heavily travelled area, downtown business district. Ideally, though, don't leave your bike outside. The thief will explain to any who ask that he lost his key.

Merton, Kryptonite locks tend to keep the bike where you left it, but I remember a friend showing me how he could pull the end of the cable out of the locking part on his super thick krypto cable lock. These fat cables were thought to be the best thing when a rash of u-lock cracking crimes was occuring (about ten years ago). The crooks never left any broken lock parts so you couldn't warrenty the loss thru Krypto's theft-proof guarentees. My guess was they also scammed warrenty deal sending in the lock they shattered and claiming their own bike was stolen!

Chain-rattlers, you got security, but I can't carry all that weight. I don't even use the heavier NYC mini locks for the weight. Hoping my mini evo 2000 keeps working. Knock on wood, I know it's not the best protection.
