a local is selling an old cdale 3.0 , just wondering if anyone has experience with these, maybe converting for cx? or winter commuting ( i would want wide, knobby tires for both applications)

heres a writeup of their ad:

Up for sale is a nice Cannondale 3.0 road bike.
This bike is a 21" frame (bb to top of seat tube)53 cm
Equipment includes:
Bars & Stem- 3TTT
Seat- Bontrager
Crank- Gipiemme 53/42 rings on 170 mm arms
Rims- tubular or clincher ( your choice)
Hubs- go with rims of your choice.
Gears- & Brakes- Shimano 600 (downtube)
2 alloy bottle cages.
Currently weighs in at 18lbs without pedals
$300.00 and you can ride away.

doubt you'd be able to fit knobbies and I wouldn't buy a bike with that big of a dent in the chainstay anyway.

It would be far more hassle than it's worth. You take a good road bike and create a crappy cross ride. Keep looking.

That "dent" is part of the frame design. My buddies looks just like it.

Yes, the dents (there'll be one on the other side as well) are to provide clearance for the ends of the crankarms. But tire clearance is likely to be an issue. I have the crit version of this bike and can barely fit smooth 28 mm tires. Nice bike, but not if you want to use larger tires.

the down tube shifters may be a hassle when it comes to over the shoulder time.
