Can anyone suggest a good, detailed primer on bicycle mechanics? I'm really interested in learning to work on my own bike, but I'm a complete novice. I can change a tire, and that's about it. I can't really afford to drop $100 on a mechanics textbook right now, but is there some kind of "teach yourself bicycle mechanics" book out there? How did you all learn to work on your bike?
Thanks!

Zinn and the Art of Mtn or Road bike maintenance, or read up on ParkTool.com, or read through the $100 Barnett's Manual set in this forum for free (look for the sticky at the top of the thread list)

First, if you haven't already, play around on Sheldon Brown's site. He has a number of great articles. http://www.sheldonbrown.com

Second, Park Tool has a section of their site describing how to work on a bike (after all, it is in their interest to encourage people to purchase their own tools for bike work). http://www.parktool.com/repair_help/index.shtml

Third, read this forum and don't be afraid to ask questions.

also, you learn to work on your bike by actually working on your bike... i use the park tools as a reference whenever i need something done i dont' know how to do.
