Road Cycling - Who Has the Most Miles on Their Bike?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Newbie here. I have enjoyed reading the post on this forum. I was wondering who is the king of the total miles? I just got my first road bike since I called them ten speeds during my teenage years.
Had my first flat at 10 miles, oh well.
Smooth roads to all.

Reef, got you beat on the flat. Picked up my bike a couple weeks ago. Two flats so far. First one was during the test ride , 2 blocks from the LBS. The second one was at about 350 miles. That one was a pain had to carry the bike about 3 miles to get off the bike path and out to the road to get picked up. I learned a valuable lesson that night. Always make sure you have everything with you when you leave. I took the seatbag with all the goodies in it (tube, pump, etc) off the night before, to put the bike in the repair stand. From now on the seatbag gets strapped to the top tube when it comes off.
Good Luck with the new bike and keep the air in them tires. :)

700 miles in 14 days = 50 miles a day. Hmm...

I'll be passing 2000mi tomarrow on my commute. I started march 1st. Nelf is going to kick my A$$ if he keeps his average up. With 3kids & a W I don't get to ride as much as I would like comprimise. Riding with 60-80lbs in the trailer on hilll is not fun and hearing the W say how fast did you take the kids down that hill???? not good either

What it is with new bikes and flat tires??? I rode mine for about 5 minutes up the street and back on the first night. Flat tire by morning. Took it back and eyeballed 'em suspiciously, made em fix it for free.
Since then, only one flat (knock on wood) due to torn valve stem.
....
Oh, and I have about 325 mi on the OD, not counting about 75 miles where I forgot my computer.
700 miles in 14 days = 50 miles a day. Hmm...
700 miles in 14 days? Why is that hard to believe? I've done 50+ miles 8 days in a row (mostly uphill), coulda did 14 but the tour ended... Alotta people ride 50 miles a day...
Oh by the way, I just got my new bike so I only got about a grand on there.

It shouldn't be hard to believe, especially when you take into account that I have no life. :p

Just say your training to be a pro cyclist.
This year, I'd say I did close to 10000 k, 1\3 offroad. Really, my first year of serious cycling. LOove it.
Naw that's too high, no 'cyclocomputer' I'm too butch, but above 8000. I love getting new tires!
It gotten so bad I cycle at night just to get a few k's in before bed. I'm not training for anything.
Just conditioning my body, so I can ride pretty much ALL day offroad. I just gotta eat more, I'm losing far to much weight. ( I wasn't overweight to begin.)

I'm sure the king of mileage has no idea what their mileage is. I'm up to about 7000 miles on a bike I bought a year ago (used, the computer said it had about 350 on it so the computer now says about 7300). About 200-500 more on other bikes in the same time.

Not hard to believe, but it's the "only" I didn't like in your post. While riding 700 miles in 14 days is not spectacular -- especially while on tour --, most people don't ride 50 miles a day.
In terms of total mileage, my commuter has registered approximately 70 000 km so far... but that's since 1980 and it includes a couple of major tours and a few minor ones. It is now used as a commuter, and even though my commute is only 3 km long each way, it's incredible how fast it adds up... with shopping and other detours included.
My tourer has 16 000 km (since December 2000) and my tandem has 1300 km (since this Spring).

There's no way I'm the "king", but.............(jeez, I am small enough to mention this :) .....)
I've done about 96,500 miles (155,000kms) since 1988, but I didn't have a 'speedo' until 1991, so the first three years are a reasonably accurate estimate.
My 1988 Raleigh 531c, which I bought new in 1992 (hmmm, how does that work?) has at least 50,000 miles on it (80,00kms)

My bike I bought a year last February has 9270 miles on it (Commuter and Weekend bike). I am hoping to put between 8000 to 9000 on it over the next year. I have had several bikes over the last 20 years so I don't know what my total is.

16,700 miles on my oct 1999 purchase and current bike. 7/29/04.
all with 3kids, wife and very full-time job.

I wasn't trying to be condescending towards anyone. The question that he asked is "Who has the most miles on their bike?", which I was answering literally. So while 700 miles might be pretty good for two weeks of effort, it's a small amount in comparison to someone who's had their bike two years.

Who has the most miles on MY bike? I do. :D
My wife doesn't like to be called "The Bike".

I DO have to get a life
I sort of feel like I've cheated in the last few years. I went back to uni, and started doing a lot of commuter miles. It's heaps easier to rack up the kms when you're doing stacks of commuting, partly because, after reaching your destination, you get to rest for a few hours, then ride home fresh.
I currently have over 140,000 miles on my bike and it's components all purchased in 1984. Here's the break down.
During the first 5 years I averaged 18,000 miles a year, the next 4 years I did 0 miles due to bike burnout, then for the next 11 years I averaged just over 5,000 miles a year. So that would be 18,000X5=90,000 then 5,000X10=50,000+90,000=140,000 miles...I rounded it up due to some of later years I did more than 5,000, plus I did not include this years mileage.

Hitchy, thanks (I think!) for "seppo". I'll put it in my collection :) All I could think of was septuagenarian (suggesting old enough to remember the English system) so I Googled and found this interesting explanation, which is complicated enough that I don't feel like a fool for not having deduced the answer:

G'day Lew,
the things ya can 'google'!....exactly the right explanation too!. Please take it as it was mean't, when Aussies give you (either personally or as a collective) a nickname, it usually isn't meant as an insult.(infact mostly a term of endearment!) As you successfully 'googled', 'Seppo' is rhyming slang, which is a 'way of life' in Oz. we have millions of them, (probably why the rest of the world sometimes struggles tio understand us!). We got it from the 'POMS' (English), which isn't rhyming slang, but from P risoner O f H er M ajesty, which the original convicts to Oz had on there uniforms,
cheers,
Hitchy

I read it exactly as you meant it, Hitchy. Besides, I've never met an Aussie I didn't like, no matter what he called me (and that goes from my Sydney-born son-in-law too.)
Yes, rhyming slang has got us totally bamboozled; no way to decode the meaning except by being told by one in the know--by which I can now say my tv program starts soon so I'm about to go APPLES. (Hope that's grammatically correct.)
Thanks for POMS. I'm starting to feel multilingual already!
